I find it both refreshing and disappointing that a thread called 'society's rotting' uses cars and movies and video games to present its argument.
It's a debate I can participate in and actually understand, and yet it's sad because, well, this IS what's actually important to me. ![]() [ 09-04-2003, 03:10 AM: Message edited by: 605 ]

In defence of allt things contemporary...
There is a definite tendecny to look back to the past with teary-eyed sentimentality. The brain only wants to remember the good things and cuts out the dead wood. So what i'm saying is that in 30 years we'll look back and say... things were so good in the 2000s (is that we you call them?) we had: The white stripes LOTR trilogy Harry potter books Championship manager and who knows what else... We might conveniently forget: Matchobx twenty Matrix reloaded Playstation games in general wearing your boxer shorts above your trousers Either that or we'll look back upon them with nostalgia and forgot that they were actually a pile of crap e.g. 'Pong' - tons of nostaligia value, but was it ever gonna be a 300hr marathon? In conclusion...there was just as much s**t then as there is now - we just don't remember it.

it seems like alot of you guys are disgruntled with consumerism. Contrary what the non-stop barrages of advertising will try to tell you, you really can live without cars, movies, computers etc. Try it, see if you like it.
- If you do like it, awesome! Living by your own devices and not relying too much on trade for your resources is quite exhilerating, yet physically and mentally taxing. - If you don't like it, well that's great too. You'll have a new appreciation for the things that you are currently bored with. There can come a point when you become so used to living an easy consumer lifestyle that you take for granted the luxuries which you really are proviledged to have. It's only after we are forced out of our comfort zones that we can recognize what we had in the first place.

Things were better in the old days? Never! I miss my friends from childhood and, indeed, first experiences with just about everything ranging from sex, games and stealing candy are irreplacable and will never come again, but never will I say that things were better back then. The future will be better: once we abolish mass-destruction weapons, unite all people under a single flag or faith, replace bezine and gas with cars on water and use fusionpower instead of nuclearpower! Society's rotting? Get out more and experience some of the good things in life! Don't read the paper or watch the news for a day. Visit friends and family, go to a park, be a little more positive about things. This is depressing man..... [ 09-20-2003, 06:10 AM: Message edited by: Zuvio ]

It remains a mystery. Maybe in 10-12 years we might hear the answer on one of the 45 discovery channels ![]()
