I think a high level Kensai or Monk would do well...

Or a Blade.

It's been proven several times that a high level Sorcerer defeats all other opponents.

With lesser players, the monk or anything with a decent MR has an advantage over the sorceror, since the more obvious tactics become susceptible to failure.

But the better the players the less MR matters. Especialy when the sorceror knows how to (ab)use Project Image and the like.

So in the end the Sorceror is best, but it is hard to get the most out of them.

I would think that it would depend upon what equipment one has and how close the two combatants are when they start out.

Sorceror --------> Time Stop (if he has it).... then the game is over...

A monk/blade cannot survive a well used Sorc. IMHO

where is Dundee when you need him

I *have* taken on a sorcerer with a monk or wizard slayer and won. Like Desuma says, it depends on the armour and weapons and the distance-any sorcerer would be screwed if a top-of-the-range fighter, barabarian, monk, paladin or ranger stood right in front of him before he could get his defenses up and hacked him to little pretty pieces.

Then it wasn't an intelligently played Sorcerer. Protection from Magic weapons casts instantly, and even if you happen to have a Normal weapon in your quickslot, you still won't be able to get though his Stoneskins (which any self-respecting Wizard leaves up 24-7) before he casts Time Stop. Even with his crappy THAC0 and piddling 1 attack per round, each hit is still an Auto-Hit, and he can always cast another Time Stop before the first one runs out. (Alternatively, he can always simply cast Lower Magic Resistance.)

You're an Inquisitor and you can Dispel his PfMW? Good for you. Too bad he can Ring of the Ram you to a safe distance, and complete his Time Stop after chugging an Invisibility Potion.
