Okay, all my characters are women and my dads character is a man, I've noticed that in the game sometimes men have female characters and women have male characters. Well, I really don't like adventuring with henchies b/c my main char is a E/Mo--who dies too easily. So, I ask for help when I'm in town or I'll ask one of the friends on my friends list. Most of the people that come to my aid have male characters (which if I could help it, I'd prefer more female char's to help me)...but alas there are few. It has occurred to me that some of these male char's could be female people, but it's not so obvious or believable to my loving father...
Um, what should I do?
...He knows there are men who have female char's but I'm not so sure he'll believe women have male char's... I'm at a loss...
And, how many people on this forum have played genders opposite their own (past and present)?

Yeah I have 2 males and one female Character. For some reason my magic users are nearly always female.

The only time I have found a man pretending to be a woman in Guild Wars he had a female character and was standing near the storage bin in Ascalon begging for money saying come on boys watch me dance in my undies. At the same time he was saying give me money I'm new here and have no money. This guy was a chump a number of us made a point to tell everyone in Ascalon to avoid this person they were just trying another new way to scam money from the guys. Even other girls were bashing him saying the she was really a boy trying to get free money. Finally he got really mad at us and started using bleeped out words in a way that only proved her to be a guy in girls clothing trying to get something for nothing.

I have met alot of guys useing female characters and they do it for the fun of it and no other reason and I've met as many women useing male characters for the same reason in fact I've met more girls playing guys. I can see no problem with it and only somebody unsure of their manhood of womanhood would worry about the gender of a game character.
Have you every played Tomb Raider because in that game your a two gun toating Big breasted babe for the whole game and I never herd anybody complain about that.

Like TDC said he uses Female characters as magic users and if I remember he had a female Mage in the Neverwinter Nights Mod that Ziroc built called Escape from Undermoubtain. We never thought anything of it because we know TDC was role playing a character so, male or female makes no difference what so ever. Its the person behind the character that makes the difference. If you want to play as a male be one or if you want to Play as a girl then be one but dont play the gender play the game and the professions that character uses and don't worry about it.

I'm sorry, maybe I missed something. What exactly do you want to do? Does he need to understand that some of the male sprites could be female gamers?

It's not really an issue as far as I can see, let him think what he wants.

Myself, I have 4 characters, 2 of each Gender. Looks like I prefer warrior women (what can I say, buffy kills everything) and healers, and male rangers and ele's.

I really want him to see that people play what they feel like playing, and that some of the "guy" characters that help me in the game could very well be women, he's got this whole macho-man type thing going along with the over-protective dad who's watched all the news clips about serial killers/rapists in chat rooms trying to steal little girls or boys away...I don't know.
Thank you all for your comments, they are very helpful in my debate with him.

This may be settled already, but there are a lot of reasons people might play the 'other' gender in RPG's. The most obvious, stated above, is that it doesn't matter. It's not a dating game. It's not being deceptive. It's not a sign of gender confusion or experimentation. It may signify something for some people, but that's not a brush we should paint broadly with.

I've played male, female, and non-gendered characters in all kinds of RPGs. Just about every game other than GW has races too. Does that say anything about you if you don't play a human? It shouldn't. None of us have human identity confusion

It surprised me that my younger sister played a hulking Tauren warrior (minotaur thing) in WoW. Why? Who knows. Given the wide range of choices, that's just what was most appealing to play for her. She wasn't really roleplaying either, so she didn't have a deeper character in mind, like some who roleplay alternate genders. She was disappointed, however, when she learned that if she picked the female Tauren, she'd be able to do the Riverdance lol. Oh well.

I usually like to roleplay female character more than male one, it's fun to play something different from what you are in real life.
