![]() I had, as you can see, already been to the Drow city when I captured this. Completely without prebuffs or other enhancers this is.

If it's AC you desire, then your AC is only going to get better.
When you beat the snazu out of the Demon Knights, blind the enemies with envy from a gleaming set of Armor of the Hart (upgrade to you know what when you meet you know who in ToB). Do you still have the Gorgan Plate? It has the best modifiers against Slashing Weapons in the entire game spectrum. Access to the Drow City means the Sentinel Shield (upgrade to a better shield in ToB). Viola, push that AC number lower. When you resurface. A visit to everybody's favourite Demi-Lich will mean further AC reduction, better saving throws, immunity to Poison/Disease and regeneration. Play Jingle Bells with the Mace of Disruption +2 for laughs. The Defender of Easthaven grants a -1 AC bonus and gives phy. dmg. resistances to boot. If missile weapons are not a concern and Magic Damage is not a worry, AC Modifying Belts will make your day. ---- Quip: The spell Regeneration is pretty handy in prolonged fights. Pretty scary regeneration rate, especially if you haste yourself (Gauntlet from the Kuo-Tua Prince, Ring of Gaxx, etc...). |

Didn't know that about the Gorgon Plate actually, haven't gotten it yet. Had some fun calculating what AC I could have when facing Abizigal. Using the Gorgon Plate, Helm of Balduran, The Sentinel/Shield of the Order, Ring of Gaxx, Golden Girdle, Cloak of Balduran, Defender of Easthaven, and activating DUHM, Prot from Evil, Defensive Harmony and Aura of Flaming Death, I ended up with -34 AC vs Slashing weapons. Abizigal would be hitting air mostly
![]() I could also throw in the Preserving Boots (probably will at some point in the game actually), and then he'd really be helpless. [ 02-04-2004, 06:13 AM: Message edited by: Rataxes ]

Parts eight and nine will cover my journey through the Underdark. I had planned to cover it in one posting, but it would've been too massive. Will write part nine tomorrow. It was in the Underdark I first faced some serious difficulties, an interesting period in this priests life.
So after climbing down the rope from the Sahuagin city I ended up somewhere in that dreadful place they call the Underdark. Having no idea where I was, I started to wander around a bit. Encountered a stray Mindflayer who my two aerial servants took care of after I had temporarily disabled and weakened it with an Implosion. Eventually, I came to a small duergar encampment, learned from the people there that Irenicus had gone this way, and bartered a bit as well, friendly chaps. Moved on and spotted a large party of drow, looking fairly hostile. So Drow have high resistance to magic, guess I have no choice but to use the Seeking Sword on them, one by one? But ah, I remembered that Fire Storm ignores MR, and drow have no resistance to fire what so ever! So I summoned two skeletons, activated Prot from Evil, Prot from Fire, DUHM, Sanctuary, and Defensive Harmony. Went up to the party, priest began casting True Sight, so I wasted no time in calling up my two skeletons. When they had gotten the attention of the entire party, I revealed myself and cast a Fire Storm. My skeletons suffered collateral damage and turned on me at this point, but it didn't matter. Everything but myself had been reduced to scorching piles of ash once the four rounds had passed. Fire Storm proved to be a most effective drow killer! My Prot from Fire was still active, so I moved on and used another Fire Storm on the strange giant mushrooms, they burned good! On the move again, I soon reached a Svirfneblin city. Their leader asked me to rid their city of a demon they had awoken. I complied and was off to their mine with a Stoneshape scroll in my pocket. I summoned a pair of skeletons to help me out and activated HRDS and Free Action. Called forth the Balor and we all began slashing each other. He stunned both of my minions, but for some reason attacked the skeletons instead of the only threat left to him. With his attention elsewhere, I brought him down with ease. Sealed the shaft and returned with the good news to the Svirfneblin leader. Paid a visit to the inn to sell some junk and have a good nights rest. The leader had told me about someone who could help me find Irenicus, so I went to find that someone. Stumbled upon a huge alien-looking container of some sort. While examining it a svirfneblin suddenly appeared behind me. Had apparently been imprisoned in that thing for quite some time. I checked for other survivors and sure enough, there were a few others. Some of them hostile unfortunately, turned the lich, cremated the mage with a Firestorm following a Dispel Magic, and summoned a few servants to help me take down the two fighters that had gone mad while in there. I moved on and soon reached a bridge. Suspecting an ambush, I left two servants behind on the other side of the bridge just to be safe. Surprise surprise! A party of drow did appear. Me in HRDS mode and my minions made short work of them though. Found the cave and entered. It was apparently a dragon I had to get my aid from, she wanted me to get her eggs out of the Drow city first though. So she disguised me and sent me away to Ust Natha. Once in, I was told to make contact with a certain Soulaufein. Very well, I found him and it turned out he was gonna make me work my butt off in this place. Our first task was to rescue a captured drow from the Mindflayers. On my way down there, I met a strange rag-tag band with everything from a giant halberd-wielding Ogre to a human mage and a tiny Goblin Archer. Despite their differences, they had at least one thing in common - they all died horribly to my Fire Storm. Moving on, I ran into yet another pack of hostiles, this time some Kuo-toa lizards. How did I then deal with these assailants? Yes that's right, holy fire once again rained down on my assailants and they were all dead within a matter of rounds. After that the road to Solaufein was clear. I activated HRDS and Chaotic Commands and then spoke with him. He drew the Mind Flayers and their Umber Hulk pets to us and the fight was on! It was simple, I concentrated on killing the Mind Flayers (since they give the most XP, why else?), used True Sight when they went invisible, and ran away whenever my INT was drained to 1. Their ballistic attack didn't hurt as much as I remember, only for 70-90 HP at the most, I seem to recall those nasty things regularly doing more than 100 points of damage. I was ordered to return to the city once they were all dead. I did so, only to find that Phaere was now in charge, and wanted me and Sola to kill a Beholder lurking in the city. I stayed in the back when it appeared and let Sola and Phaere take the hits, while I killed it with a single Implosion. After a few days of leisurely walking about the city, I was once again summoned by Phaere. Wanted us to the Svirfneblins a bit of a scare by killing a few of them, I would have none of such a vile deed! Once I got there I assured Sola I could handle it myself. Convincing the Svirfneblin patrol leader to give me his helmet without a struggle wasn't too hard once I had explained the situation. How fortunate that Phaere didn't want a direct proof of the Svirfneblin patrol's demise, like their heads or something. She was quite pleased with just the helmet, so pleased that she wanted to take me before the matron mother! After meeting her, she ordered me to acquire the blood of a powerful creature in the Underdark. I'd get the blood of all three to convince her of my loyalty. Cleared out the tower of Deirex and Jae'llat house before I left however. House Jae'llat was quite crowded, but the more the merrier, right? ![]() Ops, hehehe. Once out of the city, I went to the Mind Flayer city first. Things didn't quite go as planned, and I was captured and put in a cell seconds after entering. Served some time as a gladiator, fighting cannon fodder like Umber Hulks and Kuo-Toa. Then co-operated with the group of Githyanki also caught there (ought to have killed them on the fly for boarding our ship way back, but I could've looked forward to an extended stay in service of the Mind Flayers if I had) to break out from the gladiator arena. Once free, I activated HRDS and slew any Mind Flayers in my way until I found a bunch of unconscious humans and brought them back to life with the red goo I found in another room. I eventually reached a door that needed a "powerful mind" or "godly strength" to be opened. I was all out of mindflayers, and despite rumours that he should, that flayer in the red goo room simply wouldn't respawn. Tried out DUHM, apparently 25 STR granted by a God didn't count as "godly strength". So I had to bite the bullet and turn in the Slayer, oh the shame! Anyway, past that door and the next corridor there was an awful lot of Ulitharid, Mind Flayers, and Umber Hulks. I stayed out of sight and conjured a pack of Energy Blades and activated a Prot from Fire, can you guess what I did next? Still out of sight, I threw a Fire Storm into the room Moved back up, the left door had already been opened when a Mind Flayer walked near it, but I chose the right regardless. Another corridor, followed by another room full with Mind Flayers and Umber Hulks. I was already getting tired of fighting these things, but then something happened that really got me sighing deeply. ![]() Yes, Chaotic Command does protect against Maze, by what logic the Improved Mind Flayers can cast a version that ignores such defenses, I don't know. Now I did fall to some instakill stuff like 3 Mind Flayers getting criticals on me at the same time, or a Ballistic attack hitting for 150 damage, but this was slightly more frustrating, especially since Mind Flayers really like to cast Maze. When the odds were with me, I activated HRDS once more and cleared out that room. Only the Master Brain remained now. I summoned three Aerial Servants to help me out against the golems it would summon, then activated HRDS a third time and rushed in. Two of the servants fell to INT drain, and so only one remained once the two Ilitharids were dead and we proceeded to bash the brain, the golems weren't particularly threatening, only took some time to kill with 2 blunt attacks per round. The brain itself didn't offer much resistance and was soon dead. With it's death, the way back to the Underdark was clear, and I escaped together with the former human slaves. Part eight ends here, accounts of my toughest challenge yet - the Beholder lair, and the rest of the Underdark, will be posted tomorrow. Comment about Fire Storm: I really like this spell. It is easily the best AoE damage spell in the cleric arsenal. When we move into the exclusive category of damage spells that ignore magic resistance, this might even be the best of them all, I certainly think it's at least close to being on par with Dragon's Breath. No, it's not party-friendly (matters little when you solo), yes it does take longer to cast than DB, and it spreads it's damage over four rounds (an advantage in certain situations), but it deals more than twice as much damage per casting (if we assume that most late game SoA and ToB enemies will make always make their saves), has a tighter damage range, and you can have more than twice as many many 7th level cleric spell slots than 9th level mage spell slots. IIRC the Cloak of Cheese protects against Ballistic attack. It is an AoE spell or actually special ability.
And you can protect against those imp. Maze stuff with 100% MR. (if you are willing to gulp two rare potions. Hmm, maybe only one if you can get to 50% MR, but I don't think you can. If you were evil though ...)

Xen, I was level 33 when I left the Underdark. I will mosty certainly do the WK.
Leslie, I'm really trying to minimize the use of cheese. I'll probably succumb to the extreme usefulness of the Preserving Boots when it comes to Imp Irenicus, but other than that I'm playing as "pure" as possible. Didn't know that the Cloak of Cheese blocked the ballistic attack, but I do know that it is a single target attack, maybe you were thinking of Detonate? Quote:

Hehe... I like Fire Storm too. I had a lot of fun with it when I was soloing a Sorcerer.
![]() Drow might make good cooking with Fire Storm... but certain creatures with 100% Magic Resistance and zilch Fire Resistance will make you cackle with glee later on. ![]() Do not forget to tinker with Storm of Vengence later on. |
