I'd still appreciate some sort of explaination for the Swashie -> Mage class. It looks to me like all you get is a regular Mage/Thief lacking Backstab, any other sort of special abilities and having small, (for a mage) next to insignificant combat bonuses, but I must've missed some obvious advantages seeing as how it ends up so high on everybody's lists

The justification for the Swashbuckler->Mage is that, assuming you Dual at Level 15, you can have a Mage with a lot of extra hitpoints (Level 15 Thief gets 10D6+10, Level 15 Mage gets 9D4+6), improved Saving Throws, a -4 bonus to AC (I think), a -3 bonus to THAC0 (I think), 100% in every Thief skill without having to use items (except perhaps the Staff of the Magi, "Oh no, I'm forced to use the Staff of the Magi,") can reach the higher-end spells much faster than a Multiclassed Thief/Mage, and STILL gets the same number of spellslots (presuming you have ToB) as a pureclassed Mage. Plus you can use all of the weapons that Mages can't use, put proficiency points into your Weapon Styles (*** in Two-Weapon), and 2 stars into any valid melee weapon.
The only disadvantage is being a low-level Mage right after you Dual--but a large stockpile of spell scrolls will cushion the blow.

Alson, why a Fighter/Druid; or did you mean a Fighter->Druid? I ask this because a Cleric/Ranger trashes the Fighter/Druid and is easier to roll too.
SixOfSpades more or less explains the obsession with Swashbucker->Mages. As much as I like the Sorcerer, I concede that it cannot be compared to certain non-pureclasses. The Sorcerer excels in spellcasting yes, but can never be as versatile as some of the non-pureclasses. Top 10 is kinda small too. ![]() |
