i am soloing as a halfling Assassin and i have short sword and longswords and 2 weapon style and darts as profiences and im wondering what good short swords and longswords i should use?

Darts are a good choice. Never thought you'll here THAT one, huh?
Seriously now, since besides backstabbing and traping, poison is all the Assassin has to offer, one should know how to fully utilize it. Darts have excellent base ApR of 3, thus helping you to deliver as much poison damage as possible.

Another fine weapon for Assassins - the Fire Tooth +3 throwing dagger [ yes, it's Fire Tooth, not Firetooth ]. It deals decent physical damage - 2D4+3, plus 1D2 fire damage which will cut right through Stoneskins. Finally, it adds +1 attack per round (but is not as famous as Belm & Kundane because it can't be dual wielded).

As for Swords.... Namarra +2 is a fine backstabbing Longsword (+4 to damage). Blade of Roses +3 isn't bad, either. There are no earth-shattering Shortswords around, but Arbane's Sword and the Sword of Avoreen (if you can weild it) are good for defensive purposes.

I beg to disagree. There are some good shortswords out there.

There is a +4 shortsword, the Shortsword of Backstabbing, Arbane's, Kundane, and Ilbratha has saved my poor thieves in melee combat more times then I can mention. In a pinch, Ilbratha (The sword that casts mirror image) can give your thief the much needed edge in toe to toe melee.

How useful a character is depends on how you use them. An Assasin may "suck" in some circumstances, but if you use them properly, they will absolutely OWN.
It is the same for any character - a Sorcerer, for example, is *VERY* powerful, but won`t last long in melee...
Actually he'll(lvl 31) kill a fighter(lvl 40) in Hand to hand because he can cast spells:

Chain contingency: stone, prot from magic weapons, shadow door.

This should give you enough time to cast Timestop Then shapechange: Mindflayer and then 3/4 hits (max.) later the fighter is down and dead.

I dont think opening up with 5 of the most powerful spells in the game really counts in the spirit of 'melee'.

I've also used an assassin and I can tell you they can go off big time.
boots of speed and a knife cleared de'Arnise keep with the rest of the party just standing back out of the way (except for against the golems). So I basically soloed the quest without the advantage of solo experience. If you think Assassins suck, you're not using them properly.
