Archer is just pathetic by *comparison*.

The melee classes get to deal out massive damage as much as they want.

True, in most cases, so does the archer, but their advantages are mitigated the more you go on. At first their thac0 bonuses rock. They can actually hit stuff! Later on, (especially as kensai), its rare NOT to hit your enemies, so thats not such a big deal.

I started playing one once, and never really got into them.

I really like Archers, give 'em a bow and some arrows and you're ready to kill. If only there's the Rapid Shooting feat.

LoL, I must have finished the Gesen Bow a dozen times over and I automatically sell every enchanted arrow and bow I find. Thanks to all this talk, I'm gonna play an archer and get me some female NPC's with the new flirt mod. God, I love this game

A high-level Archer is not to be messed with. They sacrifice a little bit of damage for the relative safety of the backline.

A level 17 Human Archer using a Composite Longbow with normal arrows and Call Shot, can deal... oh...

NArrow: 1d6 damage
CLB: +1 damage
5*: +3 damage
CS: +2 damage
ArcherBonuses: +5 damage

That will be 12-17 damage with non-enchanted weapons, and the bare, bare minimum. We have not factored in other equipment and such.

A level 19 Human Fighter using a Katana, can deal... oh...

NKatana: 1d10 damage
5*: +3 damage
18/00 STR: +6 damage

That will be 10-19 damage with a non-enchanted weapon, and assumes you had an incredible stat roll for your STR.

Then... there is also the matter of Attacks per Round( ApR). An Archer with the Tuigan Bow can literally shred enemies into pieces. 5 ApR is not to be sniffed at.

The Fighter is capable of dealing more damage, but this balanced by the fact that he/she has to rumble in the frontlines. An Archer on the hand, is safe in the backlines, so he/she deals slightly less damage than the Fighter.

Archers are the equal to any melee fighter, especially if they're grand master of the short bow. A high level archer using Called Shot+Whirlwind attack with the Gesen Bow is a terror to behold. And being able to do it all in relative safety. few stand a chance even with a lone Archer w/Boots of Speed and Hide in Shadows. Sneak up, pelt them with arrows, then retreat, and repeat. But I suppose that's not much fun and Archers can be overwhelmed by masses of melee fighters, though they can defend themselves more than adaquetly. Again, it's just a matter of personal taste. Melee or Missle? the ultimate question.

I have. It is not so hard as it seems. I can't recall equipment, but I think I could equip Boots of Speed and the amulet that you get at the beggining of ToB.
