faction rating gone sour with the Umpani

It's been about a year since I last played through Wiz 8, so I'm making the kind of blunders one does when they think they know too much...

The latest: I needed the Umpani flag for Z'ant's first quest... Outside the base camp I got into a combat with a bunch of seekers. All the marching Umpani legions came in to the melee. After victory, Private what's-his-name was still paralyzed, so I thought to myself "hmm, good chance to rip off the flag whithout any interference." I took it, went away, and did lots of other stuff before coming back to Mt. Gigas days later. So you see where I now stand.

How do I get back my green faction rating with the Umpani, without using the trainer/editor? All the other umpani are still green dots, until I get within combat range of Private Flagpole. Then they all turn red (a beautiful, if alarming, sight on the radar map!). If I innitiate combat from a safe distance and kill the private in the first round, will this help?

Please help. The only real reason I'm playing through again is to get the Umpani/T'Rang alliance, that I missed my first time through.

first of all, you don't get the flag from the flagpole. One of the umpani in the base runs a store where you can buy the flag, along with weapons and such.

yeah, I know... As I said, I'm making some stupid blunders on my second time through. I forgot about the Umpani shop.

Okay, solved it. I led Private Flagpole off to a nice dark corner and whacked him out of sight (don't I just feel my karma oozing?). It turned all the Umpani yellow, but no problem with that. They greened up again as soon as I enlisted.
