Mayor brings back town crier
BUDAPEST (Reuters) - The independent mayor of a Budapest district whose councilors have suspended the local paper and TV station saying they are biased, is hitting back by employing town criers to call out the news. Tamas Derce, the mayor of Ujpest, told Reuters Thursday he is reviving the medieval tradition in protest against the decision of the Socialist-liberal majority in his town hall to silence the local media. "I will hire someone who will stand with a drum at busy junctions of the district, and another one with a loudspeaker," Derce said. The town criers will keep working until the councilors reverse their decision, he said. |

Seriously...the political bickerings in Hungary can be quite pathetic...
Sometimes I'm happy that I'm studying abroad...

Sounds good to me... Do they have the death penalty in Hungary?

Nope. Death penalty is unconstitutional in Hungary.

It beggers belief that a European country ( and one so recently free of opression) can allow the TV or press to be silenced

It's not easy to know who to believe in Hungary actually (I certainly don't know, studying abroad as I do...). The two political parties hate each other so much that they use up more of their time to diss each other than to actually get work done...at least that is the impression I get half from the outside...

Sounds awfully familiar... almost like Democrats and Republicans.
