When you guys play as a mage, what class do you usually choose,or the most powerful?I was planning on using the wild mage but can't stand all those wild surges.I think the conjurer might be nice, with the extra memory slot each level and only 8 divination spells that he cannot learn. What about the sorcerer?Isn't he too limited? Can only learn and cast a certain amount of spells in each spell level.

In order of preference,

Sorcerer,
Necromancer,
Conjurer,
Wild Mage.

The Sorcerer has less spell variety( 5 spells per level), but has incredible flexibility in his spell usage.
The Mage has a huge spell variety, but zilch instant flexibility in his spell usage( since he has to rest and memorise what he need).

For raw power, go for the Sorcerer.
For variety, go for the Mage.

Then what are the essential spells you should choose for sorcerers per each spell level?

Essential? Basic spells like Stoneskin and Magic Missile are obvious. There are as many spell lists as there are Sorcerer players. My personal lists are linked from my signature. Feel free to take a look and form your own list.

Conjurer isn't to shabby either. The loss of divination spells isn't that bad. However I too recommend playing as a sorceror, just for the experience (I'm refering to the gameplay experience and not XP points, LOL).

Dont bother choosing a kit, just be a plain mage. A little bit of each or maybe more.

A regular mage is too weak and remembers not enough spells per level. Also, it takes him too long to cast a high level spell, all the enemies are chopped by my fighters after my mage finish casting the spell.

Not with the robe of Vecna...I have solo'd a mage through BG2 and ToB and the only problem I had was in the "dead magic" zones of Watcher's Keep.

And even those were no problem with the staff of the Magi

For spells I usually choose ones such as Stoneskin, magic missile, Firewall (for those nasty dark elves), mislead, contingency, summon (good for throwing some fodder in the wave of the enemy while spell casting) cloudkill (for dragons) breach, spellthrust, and anything else that will breach spell protection, lower magic resistance, and mordakin's sword.

I know that was long winded, but I hope it helps!
