I will be studying abroad at the University of Mebourne during the spring semester next year (spring time in the US anyway, February - July). I know that there are several people on this forum from Australia, Memnoch for one, and I was wondering if anyone had any hints, tips or advice for my journey as far as what to expect, be prepared for and so forth. Any useful information concerning the University, Melbourne or Australia in general is appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Hi Wilhelm, there was a similar thread involving Lifetime if I recall. I'll see if I can find it for you...

There it is: Check out the 'To Anyone from Melbourne, or Australia for that matter..' thread.

Woah Leonis you've got a good memory..

Couple of things to know in Melbourne..
Weather can be very wierd.. lots and lots of sun in Winter for example..
When you're crossing the road, beware the hook-turns (you'll know one when you see one) especially at junctions.
Other than that..
Aussies tend to be very passionate about their sport, so no matter how stupid you think it is, dont diss Aussie Rules Footie or Cricket. Keep your mouth shut until you're out of earshot and then blast away to the other foreigners about how silly these two games are
If you're travelling there, you probably know this, but don't carry anything perishable like food or plants or anything because they've got strict laws against that in Australia.
You've really got to live here to really figure this place out. ITs too much to tell in just one post. Don't worry though, its an excellent place to live, Melbourne especially. People in general can seem laid-back or lazy since stores close at 4-5, but you won't meet a friendlier bunch of people for the most part..

No, say it isn't so Avvi. You're just saying that cos the Sydney Swans have no hope again this year. The mighty Brisbane Lions are still on the march to back to back flags

Go Melbourne Storm!
No what really gets me down about Australia? Lack of common sense I mean think about this..

People here would rather watch NEIGHBOURS (damn that) and cricket than the WORLD CUP! What. Is. Up. With. Dat!
I walk into the TV room at 6.45 and there they are, the whole population of Aussies in the Boarding House glued to the set watching Neighbours. And woe and be damned to the poor fool that tries to wrestle the remote away..*shudder* they're still cleaning the blood off the wall..
