Just getting started....I have a Level 5 Hobbit Gadgeteer and would love to explore my musical side. Any thoughts on dual classing to a Bard? I experimented a bit and found I could not take my engineering skill up any higher after switching classes to Bard so I just went back to being a single class. Would I get to raise the Engineering skill again somehow after switching to Bard?

I wouldn't advise it, reason being you won't be able to use the omnigun as a bard, and won't be able to improve it as you level up. High level gadgies really have an amazing omnigun from all the improvements they make to it, and you can only wield it if your class is gadgie.
You could take Saxx as an RPC if you want to play with a bard, he's in the umpani area.

PS, and no, engineering wouldn't be raisable as a bard, only as a gadgeteer.

Or you could be Bard for 8 levels to be able to play Rousing Drums (Haste) and Soulful Sax (Soul Shield) and then switch back to Gad. In any case, the gadgets and instruments are playable according to your levels as Bard or Gad, not your current class, so the only thing to think about is the Omnigun. You could even switch back and forth every level...

The gadgeteer is really a pretty slow-developing class, anyway, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it-it would lead to a lot of frustration, I think.

Unless you take a little time to train stealth, Gadgeteers should begin and end the game as gadgeteers: their skills don't really apply to other classes, and the ability to use some very handy items are the only thing they are good for-- once switched, all their lovely toys become unavailable.
Until you reach trynton and can make a lava lamp [hypnotic lure], all they are really good for is picking locks and a little light ranged combat. But once they have some of the better gear, they are a lot of fun, and very effective at both buffing and killing, but watch that stamina: they'll need all they can get. Best to make 'em female, so they can have a regen necklace. Oru |

In fact one of my favorite characters was a Gad for 8 levels, for the Superman and Eye4Eye gadgets, who finished as a Fighter, berzerking with Giant's Sword. And still using all the gadgets. She never used the Gun, she concentrated on Bow so she could use the Tripleshot. |

This is true of most class-switchers; if the skill is listed on your stat sheet, you can use it. If it's anti-highlighted, you can't learn more in it, but just like Stealth, any skill you have points in stays with you. The one that fools a lot of folks is Scouting--if you're no longer a Ranger you don't Autoscout, but if you have Search on, you find stuff more easily.
And, of course, the Omnigun, you do have to be a Gad currently to fire it. In my 3rd game, i had a Ninja who switched to Alc for L6 for the bonus, to be able to mix for the big bux, and she critted a Savant Guard! (with an imported Staff o'Charm) [ 07-09-2002, 12:51 PM: Message edited by: otter ] |
