Two or three times I've had parties that when first entering Trynton encounter a family of six to eight Hogars, lounging around not far from Chief Gari near the road to the Swamp. Each time I've seen then (my parties have been about level 8-9 at the time, I suppose, stay as far away as possible to avoid combat, too scared to risk combat.

I was wondering, has anybody tried to fight this family of Hogar at this stage? Do they all become hostile if you approach, or only one or two at a time?

Uh, never encountered a hogar family. There are roaming hogars, like 3-4 in the trynton area for me. But hogars are extremely strong at level 8-9. If you fight them, be prepared. Have guardian angels cast on your tanks up front. Have healing spells ready. Paralyze works wonders against hogars. The main problem with hogars is that they often knock ur guys unconscious and then your really f**ked

are you seeing yellow dots on the radar and thinking they're Hogars? I've often seen those, they're actually Picuses, which come in groups of up to 8. I've never seen Hogars in groups of even 2.

Yeah, Hogars mainly come one at a time. I've never seen more than that, though of course there could be more than one Hogar in the area. You could be right that he's mistaking a picus group for Hogars.

Yah, sometimes there's a bunch o'them in there. But they're always individuals, and rarely follow the same vector for very long.

No , he's right. Once I had a party cross the bridge to Trynton and encounter 6 hogars. We took a stand on the bridge, but a couple of the hogars could hit the rear from the bank and they smushed my wizards. I reloaded and got closer to the middle of the bridge, and with continual insanities from the pyschic and lots of damage we beat them but it was pretty close. So, yeah, don't try it if you don't think you can take them because they WILL all go hostile at the same time. I have never again run into the hogar family (but hey, one of my parties is about to enter the Trynton map now, so who knows.) Of course, I've only played about 9 parties that far, so that's over a 10% chance (though it sounds from what others have said that it's a lot less).

That they go hostile simultaneously doesn't make them a group. They fought as individuals?
You just got lucky that they all happened to be there then. I once had 4 converge in front of me, but i stayed away so they stayed yellow, and diverged quickly, so i could get them one at a time.
A reload may have enabled you to wait them out, unless they were within red range right away. (there's another place where Stealth helps, btw.)

I never had more than 3 or 4 single hogars roaming Trynton. Sometimes their path crossed ( havn't seen more then two) , but they are close for only for a short time, then each one moves its own way again.
Often they are Battering Hogars, so I avoid them usually with a level 9 party.
