I played it and was sorely dissapointed every step of the way. It sucked badly compared to every other Ultima except for VIII, that was the only one that it beat.

The graphics might have been nice but it lacked the good old Ultima VII party. The Avatar, Iolo, Shamino and Dupre all charging forward to do battle for goodness and Britannia.

A superb roleplaying serious was transformed into regular boring mindless hack 'n' slash with Ultima IX.

I've gotta say my opinion is along the same lines as Neb's. Ultima 9 just didn't match up to some of the earlier games (although I personally loved Ultima 8, I just don't get why people didn't like that one). I don't mind the hack-n'-slash of 9, in fact it can be kind of fun sometimes. I just can't stand the way they cheapened the Ultima series by dumbing it down into a kids fairy tale-style game. Ultima 7 (both parts) connected with you on an adult intellectual level. Ritualistic murder, racial segregation, political intrigue, religious totalitarianism etc etc. All the good, juicy themes were there. In Ultima 9 they just hashed out some half-assed kiddie-plot about the bad, nasty columns magically making people mean and naughty. It just wasn't like the Ultimas of old. Richard Garriot really could and should have done better.
And lets not forget the bugs. And the poor performance even on a system that met the recommended requirements.
Bah, sorry about bitching. I was just really let down by Ultima 9.

That game was just sooooo choppy and buggy that I could never get into it I still have it somewhere, so I might try again sometime, but I was really disappointed with it. I heard that after the three patches, it was half way playable.

I agree that this game is not as good as Ultima 7 The Black Gate and 7 part 2 The Serpent Isle but it was nice to trie the game again on my new computer and i installed all the patches and i bearly dont find so much bugs!
Also to kill the "Deamon" to get the "dagger" worked fine now! But still the game was a little slow with all setings to high. Wasent the game designed to use the Voodoo grapic cards only?
And the music also are very good in this game i think!

When Ultima IX first come out was the best example of software companies that disregard consumer rights, it was a buggy game, with ridiculous system requirements, and was IMPOSSIBLE to solve in his original release.

Just 2 weeks after the game come out Origin and Richard Garriot where apologizing in every game magazine i can think of, and the forums of the gamesite had only complains, a month after release the patches start coming out, a little fix here and there.

But most people already had unistall the game and buried the CD, we all wanted to forget about this joke of a game that use one of the most respected names on RPG's for computers.

You can even tell this was the beginning of the end for Origins, but that is another story, one that end in fire... http://www.gamespydaily.com/news/scr...ts.asp?id=1526

Following the advice of a friend, i took the CD of ultima 9, remove the dust and install it...

download the official patch from;
http://www.gamexperts.com/index.php?patch_id=135
http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?...e=2&file=36594

the dialog and story patch;
http://www.fansforultima.com/indexu9.htm (use this link for the lastest version)
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?...u9diapatch.zip

the extended setup;
http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?...e=2&file=64147

the unofficial patch 1.19 (basically the diretX patch);
http://www.fansforultima.com/indexu9.htm

the economy and monster patch;
http://www.fansforultima.com/indexu9.htm

After downloading and installing all this stuff Ultima 9 become one of my favorite ultimas...

Ultima VII was the last one written before the sale of Origin to EA. I left the company right after the sale, but I remember talking to the developers of VIII. If you look behind the scenes, you see a lot of references to EA as the evil behind the scenes (remember the pyramid, the globe, and the cube? EA's logo anyone?) Richard actually thought sometimes that EA was deliberately trying to undermine them.

Thanks god it's over.

You worked at Origin? Wow, lucky guy! And doubly lucky that you got out before it all turned to sh*t I guess that means we can't hold you responsible for Ultima 9 then huh? Heh heh.
Well, Ultima 7 (complete, both parts) is without a doubt my fav game of all time. Kept me entertained right through high school and I still fire it up now and again (the Ultima 7 WinX application is a Godsend). If you had a part to play in the production of that game then I simply have to say thank you!!!!

Sidenote: Pending Ziroc's approval, I may be donating some Origin paraphernalia to auction off here at IW to raise funds... We'll keep you posted!
