I am confused about what spells will be available after I switch my mage into a bishop. I have the spread sheet that has been mentioned (it is nice!).

According to that spreadsheet, my level 18 bishop (just switched from a mage who was level 17) ought to be able to learn level 2 psionic spells such as identify. He has 22 points in psionic, and 90+ points in mental. But when I try to read the book, I get the message that he is not able to learn this spell at this time.

What am I doing wrong?

Since you just switched class, your level 18 bishop is really "level 1" for purposes of learning spells. When you get him up to level 19, he should be able to learn second-level magic.

Bummer -- when will he be able to learn spells of level 3, 4 and 5? There's not too much room left.

I really mis-understood how this would work. Perhaps I should have started my mage as a bishop much earlier.

Switching to a Bishop late in the game isnt the best move IMO.

Bishops require "ALOT" of grooming right from the start & require more "exp" p/level to level up compared to a pure caster.

Personlly i recomend switching a "pure" caster to a hybrid at later stages of the game. (still get skill increases in specific realms if that realm hasnt already reached 100skill + a few more hp's & fighting capabilites).

Should also note that switching a mage for example at level 18 might sound fine since you have all your spells but the fact of the matter is your level 7 spell skills will stinks. (Power levels on spells are dependant on level & not just skill). So you just earned level 18 got all your level 7 spells but switching class means they will "never" increase past power 1 or 2 due to switching at 18 means you will never increase higher than 18 as a "mage" unless you switch bak to it at a later point.

Dual Classing isnt the most viable option in Wiz 8 compared to other RPG's with dual classing options.

Oops, my math was off there. Since he's level 1 at level 18, and you don't get level 2 spells until level 3, he'll have to make level 20 to get second-level spells.

It's usually best, as already pointed out, to start with a bishop early on. Or else do very early class switching, such as priest - mage - bishop. Personally, I prefer to begin with a bishop. Anything else is really too slow.

Dale, thank you for you comment about the spreadsheet. One thing I'll point out, it doesn't (yet) handle profession-changed characters.

To my understanding (current theory), lets say your character is now level 20, having achieved 17 levels as a Mage and 3 as a Bishop;

For spells in the Wizardry spellbook, you can learn any spell up to Level 6
For spells in the Alchemy, Psionics and Divinity spellbooks, you could learn up to level 2.

I did similar to you, but waited until my Mage got to level 18 (so he could learn level 7 spells), then changed to a Bishop. Best thing I did! Sure he didn't learn as many spells as my pure-Bishop, but had more spells than if he'd stayed a pure-Mage.

Visit http://wiz8.web1000.com/perko.html if you want to learn more on how spell availability is determined.

So I am now begining to realize.

Double bummer!!!

What is especially frustrating at this stage is not knowing how it was going to work. I fault the manual about that (or my not reading the manual well enough, not sure).

What you said above has convinced me to do two things:

Go back to a save before I switched (not that long ago).

Try a bishop from scratch next time.

Good idea. They are realy slow to develop, but at level 14 or so my bishop finally started to become an attacker with some nice spells. Now he is level 23 and rocks. If he continues like this at level 25 he will have maxed out each of the realms. Maxing the spell books is much more difficult with a bishop.

Two bishops for me. They can split duties and learn different realms, thus go up faster in specific areas. I used to have two and an alchemist, but dropped the alch eventually after learning how to bring up the bishops correctly.

How good a fighter is a bishop?

What weapons can they use?
