Recently started playing... I hope someone can help me out here. As soon as I installed the game I went ahead and installed the latest patch release as well. Come to find out (at least so I've heard) that the latest patch nerfs pickpocketing. I don't want to miss out on my five-finger discounts, so I was hoping someone could tell me where to download the "second-to-last" patch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried a few different websites, but the only patch available for D/L is the latest one.

Go to http://www.wizardry8.com

Then go to patches. Then on the mirror sites, merely do a search for the wizardry 8 patches, and you will find all the patches there.

It doesn't 'nerf' it -- it just makes shoplifting difficult. You can still pickpocket as much as you want (until you get caught, that is) but shoplifting will be noticed by the NPCs after you leave and you'll have to appease them with money or items next time you return. It's still possible to get your pickpocketing quite high even with the latest patch (my bard had an unadjusted 85 by end game and I didn't try to raise it that much towards the end) and there is also a Misc item you can equip which will allow you to increase it by 10 or 15 points PLUS you can wear two of them.

IMO, the patch fix makes a lot of sense because it makes the NPCs a bit harder to outsmart and is more realistic. It is also a good challenge to have to use your wits to get around those NPCs to get some things. Plus if you have someone with the alchemy skill you can get as much money as needed just by mixing potions so it's not as necessary to shoplift things you can't afford.

Thanks to you both, Vap and Jem... I'll continue my search for the right patch, and experiment going both ways with the pickpocketing/shoplifting option. I'm pretty "anal" about my party, so I'm sure I'll be starting over a few times. I'll give both patches a try. Thanks again.
