No, anyone can merge potions and powders as long as they have alchemy. However, many of them require a fairly high skill in order to merge. The flash and sneeze powders need an alchemy skill of 50, I think.

If you get the message that "these items cannot be merged", it means that no one can merge them. If you get the message " cannot merge these items", it means that your alchemy skill is too low.

Good Luck

Any class that can learn Alchemy can merge potions and powders. However, the Alchemy skill must be high enough for whatever you're trying to create. Pandemonium powder is pretty high-level stuff, and Alchemy 15 is not good enough.

Have your ranger practice with something low level, like light heal plus mod heal.

spydah has a complete spoiler chart for what can be merged and the alchemy skill required to do so. the chart isn't complete, as there are still a few merges that no one has reported in on yet.

the link will take you right to that chart, so make sure you want to know before you click on it.

btw, if you DON'T want to be spoiled, i will give you a nudge. there are only 2 pots that can be made with the lowly skill of 15. you have to raise that skill ALOT before you can make the powder you want.

i will tell you a couple of things, from my experience. you can raise your alchemy skill very fast by mixing whatever potions or powders you already know how to do. who cares if you don't need them? just make them and sell them. buy more ingredients and make more and sell those.

here's additional advice.
when you make your pots and powders, to get the best experience, make your pots and powders one at a time. it takes longer, but if you do 5 at a time, for convenience, you will have shorted yourself by 4/5 experience.

and if you have a party member who has the ID skill, have them ID the pots and powders as you make them. you will raise their skill also. and the same advice holds true for them. separate id for every bottle and bag, for more experience.

Alchemist - Ninja - Ranger - Bishop can use the alchemy skill.

Sneeze & Flash require a skill of 50 to combine.

Best bet is to combine Light & Mod heals and while your doing this save the Heavy Heal potions for later as you can combine these with cure lesser cond. to create disease cure potions which combined again with a heavy heal potion creates a renewal potion. If you went around to each vendor and brought out thier stock of cure lesser cond., light heal & mod potions and created a whole stack of Renewal potions you can turn into a very rich person putting the money factor aside and allowing to purchase most of what you will want in spellbooks & armor/weapons in the late end of the game.
