Looking at the experience cap...looks like you can only get up to level 4 spells in Baldur's gate (i'm not up to level 7 yet but I've got and old school D&D book with the level stats in it heh). So I'm guessing that level 5 (...and 6 and 7?!) spells are only used in TOSC unless you get that stuff to remove the xperience cap....am I wrong or is this right?

You could get an XP cap remover, but you'll be able to finish the game on its own - especially if you complete TotSC. You're mage can memorize one fifth level spell at level 9. That's it. Anything higher then that would be in BG:SoA. If you mean where can you find the spells, then I think the majority of them are contained in TotSC areas, the same as in the original part of the game.

I have heard that you can only learn 1 level 5 spell as well that is why I was surprised when my mages ended up with two level five spell slots. I am using "The original Saga" but I didn't think there was any difference.

Yeah isn't it true that if your mage is a specialist then you get one extra spell per level as retribution for not being able to cast your opposite school of magic?

That's the right of it, and most people have a choice of Dynaheir of Edwin (if you want a decent mage). Flexibly speaking, Edwin's the better choice as a conjourer - they're opposition school is Divination which isn't too much of a hardship to miss out on in BG1.

Yes they were specialist. The first time through I had Dynaheir, and the second time through with Edwin and "Golum my lawful evil Gnome Fighter/Illusionist." I guess that would explain the second slot.
Now I am surprised the one slot gets mentioned so much because I thought every one used specialist mages. Even Xan is a specilist. |

That is probably because a good many people rely on the NPC mages in the game rather than rolling their own up. If they do, its often multi-class, and the only multi-class specialist mage is the gnome cleric/illusionist. All of the other fighter/mages, cleric/mages etc. are all of the "ordinary" type.

In straight BG1, without ToSC, you can find 2 scrolls of Cloudkill, but you won't be able to cast it from memory until you hit ToSC levels. As far as Priests are concerned, both Clerics and Druids are limited to 4th-level spells in BG1, and ToSC gives Druids the ability to cast Level 5 spells.

Doesn't matter if you're a specialist. There are a few spell scrolls of higher levels in the game, however, they're only good for one use and then they're gone... You could memorize the spell but you wouldn't be able to use it...
