Either my characters are really weak, I'm an idiot or there's a glitch in this game: Every time an Umber Hulk comes into range of my party (or any individual like my "Hidden" thief), they ALL instantly become confused. Not just one or two, but ALL, and all at the same time. This is a bit of a problem because certain fights (like the one with Malavon I'm currently trying to complete) becomes a self-slaughter exercise when the confused characters turn on each other.
It's bad enough trying to kill Malavon and the Golems, but I can't even get to the point of actually fighting even the Golems since my characters all become confused when one Umber Hulk appears. Let alone defeating the four that are part of this fight. I've survived this far by having my thief and mage kill them from a distance, but that won't work in this instance. Suggestions? |

When they're alone you can usually deal with them with little trouble, but when you have to deal with two Iron Golems at the same time, it can be very tough. Some things you can do are: Have your Cleric (I hope you have one!) memorize lots of Chaotic Commands spells, as they will protect you from the Umber Hulk gaze. On top of that, improve your saving throws with Protection from Evil 10 ft radius and Bless/Recitation (a must before any battle IMO). Dispel magic might work as well, but it won't help if your Cleric or Mage is confused as well. Potions that improve saving throws or resist commands will help. And, of course, try to dispatch them quickly. Since in Malavon's room they all appear in a small clump, dropping a Fireball on them should weaken them enough to take them out with little trouble. Hope this helps!

I played with only 2 characters so my level may have been higher, but... Have your best fighter close in for melee combat and your other characters do ranged attacks. Should you fighter become confused, he should still fight the Umber Hulks. Once the Umber Hulks are defeated, just wait until the confusion passes.

Aside from the protections mentioned above, summon some minions to absorb the hulk's attention and stay well away from the mess, pick 'em off with ranged weapons. Works for me.

barhhh I just cast chaotic commands on my dwarven fighter and send him wadeing in on his own, let the rest of the party stay well back untill he's done with the damn stinkin things, let them fall before me mind you when yur a level 13 fighter with 130 odd hit points and an armour class of -14 (thanks to my cleric and mage and the finest set of full plate u ever lade eyes on) and wielding the Celerbrants Blade then 10 umberhulks would be hard pressed to kill him never mind 4 or so
