What advantages do you get for three or four proficientcy points? According to the booklet there is nothing beyond two points!
I have Kalid with four points in large sword.

There's a table for this in your manual:

THAC0-bonus//Damage-bonus//# of Attacks
* 0//0//1
** 1//2//3/2
*** 3//3//3/2
**** 3//4//3/2
***** 3//5//2

You won't be able to get five stars in BG1 though, you'll need the capremover or BG2 for that.

I don't see that table Petrarcus, which one is it?

Also... fighters are allowed up to five proficiency points per slot(four in BG1). I thought rangers and paladins were also allowed five proficiency points per slot but since my ranger can only have two points per slot, I'm not so sure.

Really kinda sucks too! I designed a fighter to be skilled with large swords and my ranger to be skilled in bows yet if I can only receive four or five proficiency points for a specific slot with my fighter then it almost seems like fighters have a higher potential of bowmanship.

Oh, and what the booklet is refering to is... no STARTING character may have more than two dots allocated to any proficiency. So where you may not be able to start with more than three points in a single slot, you will be able to go beyond that impediment the next time you get a proficiency point. Though maybe only with the fighter...

(time for dinner now, so I'll be brief)
Armageddon, you're right on that note. Just to clarify: only 'pure' fighters can allocate more than 2 prof. pts in any specific wpn type; rangers and paladins can maximum of only 2 pts.
