Universal Melee Weapon

Is there a melee weapon that can be used by every class? or at least Fighter, mage, thief and cleric?

I want to start a game as a human fighter, get the keep and then dual into something - thief, mage or cleric.

I had thought about using a staff but i don't think that a thief can use one. Is there a proficiency that someone would advise?

Quaterstaff, only class that can't use it is monk's..

It's nearest to universal as your gonna get. (unless you make your own)

Just a thought but staff/mace is avlible to everyone I think..

IRL a cardboard tube from a roll of xmas wrapping paper makes a good staff but only for a couple of hits!

Quarterstaff is almost universal.
However, there is one universal weapond (even usable by monks) it is the club.
Darts might be usable by everyone too, but I can't remember.
EDIT] Darts however are not a melee weapond.

Sadly, Wizards cannot use Clubs. Which makes no sense at all, really--if they can use a stick that's 6' to 10' long and requires either a good STR or lots of DEX to use effectively, they should be able to use a stick that's only 3' long and requires neither.
