Has anyone compiled/seen a (more or less) comprehensive list of the critters which you can summon in the game (from spider to shambling mound) and their stats?

Also, I find it frustrating not to know whether my summoned minion (eg. elemental) is the weak version which is only good for fighting kobolds or the uber version which can clear out a den of beholders. Anybody know of a way to check which version of the summon you've called forth? They always forget to introduce themselves.

Thanks!

IIRC, the staff which you get from the avatar in Suldanessellar (Staff of the Woodlands +4) allows you to summon one. I just noticed it last night but haven't experimented with it.

summons..something i know way too much about...

mage
m swords/skeleton warriors...the only two worth getting imho...
some people like hakashars, i don't like them much...only good against liches, and in tactics mod, they deathspell much too often...demons are good, get one demon summon, only after you get staff of magi, or already have protection from evil....dispell on hit...

planetars...improve haste, mass invisible, globe of blades...they'll take multiple liches, dragons one on one and chew them up...

cleric

fire elemental, skeleton warriors...

deva rocks against undead...anti lich machines...

druid

g elemental, deva

if you have shapeshifter rebalancing mod, the g bearweres are simply awesome...

devices

the clay golem from the manual of golem summoning is one of the best summons period...immune to slashing and piercing weapons...only death spell is effective, since almost every high level tob enemy uses slashing...

remember even crappy summons, like monster summoning, or carrion crawler, can be made much more effective if you haste them, and mass invisible them...

Thanks a lot.

I've found the aerial servant to be not bad, too.

My problem with fiends is their love of fireballs.

Any thoughts about the shambling mound?

Any idea how you can tell which version (how many HD) of an elemental you've summoned?

An easy way to tell how strong an elemental you've summoned is to look at how big it appears. The bigger it is the stronger it will be. I don't really know of any other way to tell an elemental's exact strength except by looking at the different sizes and guessing...

Aerial Servants are one of the best damage dishers i would have to say they are also very hard to kill and immune to certian monsters damage types i don rember which ones though.

There are only 3 types of elementals lesser, elemental, and greater. Each elemental in one of thoose 3 classes will always have the same strength and obviously they will get stronger as the go up. There is also a controvesial 4th class of elmental which is the one you can randomly get when you cast one of the cleric/druid HLAs....its like the elemental god or something like that....???

Thanks - I know there are the elemental princes (though I have yet to take that HLA).

I was trying to figure out whether I could tell how many HD the elemental (the regular kind) I summon has. I'll give Arquendil's strategy of "look at the big muscles on that one!" a shot.

Still wondering about the shambling mound (and I think that's a great name for a pet).

some stuff on elementals:
The Elemental Princes are easy to tell apart from the normal guys. They drop a line "Who calls dsjklhs Prince of Fire/Air/..." when summoned.
Fire Elementals rock early on in the game, no matter how small they are. They can clear out some dungeons on their own because they deal elemental damage and are invulnerable to most attacks themselves (early in the game, later on they get chewed like your common War Dog).

almost forgot about the aerial servents...you see, aerial servents and invisble stalkers are both invisible all the time...they can't be targetted by charm, stun, domination spells from mind flayers, and their improved invisibility gives them some significant bonuses defensively...

however, imho, a mass invisible hasted skeleton warrior is a lot more effective combat wise, and enjoys the same bonuses and is 90% resistant to magic to boot...

dont get the pit fiend...the fireball effect makes them dangerous, and not nearly as useful as the other demons...

demons, elemental princes, devas and planetars all share two important trait that totally makes them incredibly usefull...they are all gated, not summoned so death spell can't hurt them, and they all dispell on hit...

now in my personal opinion, elemental princes are less useful than deva's or planetars...they are vulnerable to fear spells, which in my experience planetars are not, and chan, the prince of air, his perminent globe of blades could hurt your party in close melee...and the special abilities are nothing to write home about either...

the planetar is a much better spell caster, with some seriously great spells, almost enough to completely replace a party cleric...its fighting ability is slightly less than a deva...

the planetar is equipped with a silver sword, vorpal hits that dispell on strike..the deva with a mace of disruption +2...so in fighting undead, a deva will kill hordes of undead incredibly effectively...

once you get devas and planetars, all other summoning spells become obsolete...

except for clay golem summoning book...from watcher's keep, easy to upgrade early in tob...be careful, do NOT upgrade past clay golem...the upgrades are far less useful than the clay shape...can only be hurt by blunt weapons, sic it on a horde of githyanki and laugh as they attack with swords..

the shambling mound is ok, can only be attacked by slashing weapons, which mean its immune to blunt and piercing...not too terribly useful, but might be fun for certain situations...

try the greater bearweres in the shapeshifter rebalancing mod...their regen makes them incredibly powerful...
