Default BG and BGII

My oldest son and I have begun playing BGI again and are loving it. The only thing I don't like is swapping the discs in and out. Isn't there a way to copy the discs onto the HD to avoid this? I remember doing it with BGII, but it's been a loooooong time since I did it. I still have to install BGII on this machine sometime.

So, if there is a way to copy the discs onto the HD and avoid having to change them all the time, I would appreciate a refresher course on how to do that. Thanks.

IIRC (and it's been years) there's a custom install option, check everything and it should install to disc.

Get Virtual Drive.

You can download it for free on the internet.

You can do a full installation by copying the contents of the CDs to folders on the hard drive and editing the .ini file as described here (for BG2 but the procedure is identical for BG1, AFAIK)

You still need the appropriate disk in the drive to start the game.

To avoid having to change disks when transitioning areas you need to do Full Installs. The BG1 Full Install is called a "Custom Install". You first select "custom", and then select every option offered.

To avoid needing a disk in the CD to start the game you need a utility like this ... http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/products/dtLite . This is a Virtual Drive utility, which by some people is considered a piracy tool. You decide.

If you have the above set up, there is no need to edit the game .ini file.

Ok. Since I thought I had done the full install initially, but obviously I didn't. Does that mean I would have to uninstall the game, then re-install it using the Custom Install options? And, if so, will it save my games? Seems like I had to do this with BGII the first time and the game files were not erased with the un-install because they are stored in a separate folder.

On un-install it should give the option to keep or delete save files, but to be safe you may wan't to back up the save folder. And remember where it was so you can put it back where the game will look for it. But typically (in my experience) save files and .ini files will linger after an uninstall, even with some games that warn you about settings and save files being erased.

On Win XP and newer, typically saved games will be in a seperate directory, such as My Documents or My Games to avoid deletion. As was mentioned, back them up tho.
