Oh, and a sorcerer too. Just don't say to read it in the manual, because I have, and I still don't get it. Thanks.

Wild mage is essentially a mage that has a chance (with every casting) to get an unexpected effect. That is called wild surge. For example, you want to cast a fireball on that goblin, but suddenly you realize that you became the spells target. Reload.
There are good effects, too. You cast Chromatic Orb (+6 save bonus), but the surge says that the spell allows no save . Sorcerer is a mage-like spellcaster who doesn't learn spells from scrolls, he chooses them as he gains levels. He also doesn't have to choose which spells he wants to memorize before rest - he can cast any spell he knows. For example, a sorc knows these 1st level spells: Magic Missile, Grease and Armour, and he can cast five first level spells. So he can cast either five MMs, or one Greas and four Armours, or two MMs, one Armour, and two Greases, etc. Sorcerer has no primary abilities. Intelligence doesn't do anything useful for him as it does for mages. [ 06-12-2003, 04:29 AM: Message edited by: Vedran ]

Ahh, so a wild mage is a mage, just that every once in a while the spell can blow up in your face?

Yeah, essentially. He has a few perks in addition in form of special wild mage spells.
One of them, Nahal's Reckless Dweomer, is a level 1 spell that allows the wizard to chose any other spell he knows as it's actual effect. It is, however, almost certain to produce a wild surge instead. Good once wild surges start to produce good effects. Chaos Shield and Improved Chaos Shield. Two spells that lessen the bad effects of wild surges somewhat.

Wild mages are more unpredictable.
Sourcerers have a set number of spells: eg 5 level ones. Mages are yer ordanary types

The wild mage appears as one of the specialist mage choices.
As long as you have ToB installed you can play one in SoA as well.

Note that the game looks on Sorcerers and Wild Mages as wholly separate classes, NOT as Mage kits. This means that if you take a Mage character imported from BG1, you will *not* be able to make him/her into a Wild Mage or Sorcerer in BG2. (Shadowkeeper beckons, however....) You also cannot create a Sorcerer or Wild Mage in BG2, and later Dual-class them into something else.
