Have you ever gone onto an AOL public chat? If you haven't, you are one lucky person. I went onto a "Pet Chat" once, thinking that it would be a straightforward, sensible discussion about pets. How wrong I was! First, there was this person that said that he likes to eat puppies and kittens, and roasted them on grills and stuff. And the bad part was, everyone on the chat besides me agreed with him! Then some crazy dudes came on and kept posting links to porn sites. *shudder* Luckily, I was not stupid enough to click on those. People kept calling each other names, making fun of people, posting nasty jokes that weren't a bit funny. Nobody even mentioned pets, besides that person who supposedly liked to eat them. They then bagan to talk about having sex with animals. I was verbally abused so much that I finally just clicked off. The worst part is, none of them will ever get even banned for doing such things! There are absolutely NO moderators on AOL chat. None. People say what they think, and it seems that everyone is thinking about eating pets. So that's my rant for today. Unless you are ravenously hungry, I suggest you don't go onto the Pet Chat, especially.

That's gross and pathetic. Don't think I've been on AOL chat before. I think a year or so ago I went one some one similar, not AOL, but something similar. It was so stupid and unattractive, and yes, no moderators at all. People saying mundane things like:

I like grapes
Yeah Purple!
yeah
I like candy
can I eat your candy?

Then it'd get to be like cybering, I never went back LOL

Then once I went with a friend on some Hobbo World thing LOL, it was pretty sad and pathetic, more in a lame boring way than anything else. You walk around as this small character in some bar.

Then after that I tried Activeworlds. It was fun for a time, not bad really. Has moderators. You go on as a character that looks a little better than Hobbo's, but you I think have to pay them to actually get a figure with a face LOL, and different clothing. But you walk about in this 3d world with many different "motifs" and you see other people standing around that you could talk to if you wanted to. I never talked to anyone, but went on there with a friend for fun. Not something that was my particular cup of tea, but not a bad place at all, and I know many other people really enjoy it.

That AOL sounds like a nightmare! Thanks for the warning Willard, I'll make a note to never visit there. Sheesh, you'd think that disgusting behavior would be on other topics, and not the PETS area!

To start I would never use AOL, but their free disks make really good B-B gun targets if you hit them just right they explode into about 8 to 10 little targets you can stand on edge in the bark of trees. not everyone on AOL is a wacko but with all the free time they put out there it is like A magnet to them. I give AOL maybe two more years and they will go bankrupt Lets hope.
No mater where you go on the net you find alot of sick sex starved perverted people and thats when I think about how luckey we are to have the good people that seem to filter their way here to Escape Gaming, and when a wacko does show up here they get run out of town pretty fast. No I don't have any reason to try to Talk to anyone At any AOL chatline they just are not my kind of people. I
would much rather Hack an ORK in two or set fire to a Troll than eat a cat or dog, or even think about it. D&D is a game that is played by alot of very smart people and they prove it every day right here in our little corner of the internet.

I'm afraid every chatroom is like that. I don't visit them often, hardly ever even, but the people on there are VERY discriminatory. I have an AIM account to talk to a few friends, but I log on maybe once a month. I don't really have the time to sit down and talk to people via IM for hours, whereas I can take a quick glance through here, post what I deem necessary, and move on. Not that that's a bad thing or anything

My god what an excellent idea! I never thought of that, and there I was a couple of weeks ago in the woods hunting around for discarded coke cans to use as targets when I have a stack of free CDs sitting around at home!

Thanks for the tip!

Only person I ever talk to on AIM is LB, and thats damn seldom. Anyone with any sense would realise that MSN is far better. Back in the days when MSN could talk to AIM (and YIM I think, but Im not sure on that one) there was no real difference, but M$ put a stop to that. But now if you want to talk to the majority of people, MSN is the way to go.

As far as chatrooms go, anything unmoderated will quickly degenerate into the pet-eating sort of crap we dont have here. IW chat is semi-moderated, as it is populated by IW members who tend to avoid that sort of crap anyway. Although it does still degenerate into a spamfest on occasion.

Yay LordKathen!
I have the unfortunate luck to live in the Texas boonies where AOL is one of the only ways to access the internet (still working on switching to texas.net )
I took my homepages out of the "Internet Ghetto" as I have come to AOL as virtual Hell come to life, not just because of some of the people who use it but also because of the way the company and its employees treat and abuse their paying customers.

I too hope they go bankrupt and end up so far in debt that they never resurface under any name.

Willard,
Your experience in an AOL chat was just one example of how rotten "America Online" can be. You ought to see their Christian chat rooms!
Fortunately, they do allow you the option to block seeing certain people in the chat rooms and filtering the links as well but you just waste time blocking every other person who comes in LOL!
Porn spam is common e-mail box clutter after visiting any of the chat rooms too...what a shame they don't moderate their services! I guess they are just too busy hacking into and messing up their customers computers to worry about it.

They used to have a way of making private chat rooms through IE but I guess without being able to porn-spam and hack as easily that way, they got rid of them which is really too bad...me and old high school friends who don't use AIM or have AOL used to get together and chat every weekend.
MSN is just too popular for viruses.
I use YM now to talk to a select few friends from school and exchange e-mails with the rest.

Not everyone on AOL is bad though! I have met dozens of really good people from across this country through AOL (KHaN included!) and they are people I would call true friends.
There are just as many bad ones though as there are good ones, if not more! I had a guy contact me through a forum dedicated to WWII veterans to request some pictures I have from the 1940's...he is an AOL user and when I chatted with him online after e-mailing him the pics and deciding he was safe enough to chat with, he turned into a total weirdo saying we have a "relationship" now and as "his woman" I have to be online whenever he wants to talk to me...at whatever time he says for me to be there....then he started asking me to call him when I made remarks letting him know he cannot dictate my activities on or off line lol...he was just basically being a psycho and the kind of freakish man that I seem to attract LOL!
*makes a sign of the cross with her fingers* lol
I've blocked his screen name from my buddy list and let his mail go unread. If he ever tracks me down to a point where he can ask why he doesn't see me, I can always blame the time I put into school...no use telling him the truth and having him hunt me down for reals lol!

Moni, that is freaky! I hope the jerk gives up and goes away. What a lunatic!

Other than Undernet #IRC, I rarely ever enter public "chat" areas, and it's been quite some time since I've done the Undernet either. I feel badly for those people who have to put up with AOHell because they have no other alternative.

However, I doubt that AOL, coupled with Time-Warner and all the other media companies they hold/control/dominate, will go under anytime soon...unless the market really turns sour on them.
