My neighbor was given a Mac. from his school when they upgraded to Dell recently. He knows that I mess with computers a little and asked if I could help him get it set up with some upgraded hardware, software, and get it internet ready. I have never delved into a Mac. before. I told him that I do not know if they are even upgradable at all...

Can somebody offer me some suggestions as to what to do to his computer to make it interesting to an 18-year-old?

Tell him to use it as a catapult stone. Or a boat anchor.

Damn that made me laugh.

I can't help with most of it Larry, but I do happen to have a copy of an ancient but fantastic Mac game called Star Trek:Rescue. Would be happy to send it if he's a trek fan, you can't buy it any more

(and if anyone knows a free mac emulator for linux or windows do please PM me )

Although Mellagar's suggestion is probably the one you should go with, I can tell you that they are up gradable, though you can't just walk down to the local PC shop and buy parts, I'm pretty sure that all Apple hardware pretty much has to be bought directly from them, so maybe visit www.apple.com ?
As for software, It has long been said that Mac's have the best multimedia software, and I do agree with that in some places, what kind of stuff is your neighbour into? If he is into multimedia (making movies, music, and so on...) then it could be possible to do something, but if he wants to play games, then he would probably have more fun with the boat anchor

What OS is it using? If it's anything below OSX, he should upgrade to that, as everything nowadays is made for that.

I have not been able to go look at what the system looks like yet, or what its running. I plan on it tonight or maybe tomorrow.

This guy is a high school student, and knows nothing about computers. His mom's boyfriend got it for him for school work.

How old is it? I could probably guesstimate just by knowing what it looks like.

Break it down and sell for scrap. Use the money earned to get him in to some crash-course computer literacy courses!

Hey, I have a mac that's older than I am, and it has good games. Well, a good game. But still. Stop mocking it, lest it devour you all.
