Am an avid RPG player, and recently (like in 15 mins ago) KOTOR came tyo my attention. Now I have heard of it previously, but I didn't know it's an RPG (thought it was an action game).

So I'd like to know how good an RPG it is. I'm tempted to get a copy simply because it's made by Bioware (I have a few of their other products).

As a reference point, here are the RPGs I thoroughly enjoyed playing:

Ultima IV & V
BG2 SOA + TOB
BG (incl TOSC), though I found it rather tedious mid-game
IWD (+ all expansions)
Fallout 2
Some of the M & M series, particularly the "classic" ones.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

Let me see...

1. It is Star Wars based game

2. You get to play as a Jedi. Actually, you HAD to become a Jedi.

3. You can play as Dark Jedi or as a goody two shoes light jedi.

4. Good selection of armors, cool gadgets and weapons, upgradable light sabers and double bladed light sabers-- a.k.a. Darth Maul Light Saber.

5. Good Selection of party members and some cool ones like the infamous HK-47. Kind of like Morte of PS:T but cooler and more 'evil'.

And many many more. If you are the type that loves playing PS:T, you should give it a try.

If you liked Baldurs Gate, chances are you'll like KOTOR as well. The graphics are stunning (make sure you meet the requirements though) and there is alot banter with and between your party members. Your party can hold a maximum of 2NPC's, but you can easily switch between other available characters. Overall, I really like this game. Definately one of my favorite NPC's.

Edit: To quote from a review at http://pc.ign.com/articles/441/441810p1.html ;

Before you're done with KOTOR, you will:

-train at the Jedi Academy which includes learning the Jedi Code and the meaning behind a lightsaber's color.
-walk into a cantina on Tattoine where the bartender won't like you...and the bounty hunters won't like you either!
-find somebody's lack of faith disturbing.
-explore the forest world of Kashyyk and see what "Return of the Jedi" was supposed to look like if we'd had Wookiees instead of Ewoks in treetop villages
-face your former master again after all these years.
-space-walk on the surface of a battleship

There are multiple side missions that will help expand your understanding of the story as well. So in Knights you may:

-collect a few bounties that you've hunted down.
-reunite a woman and her droid so they can resume their extremely unhealthy relationship.
-fight alongside Wookiees in a struggle for freedom.
-try a murder case or two as a Jedi attorney.
-get thrown in and escape from prison once or twice.
-smuggle for the Star Wars mafia.
-get executed for insulting a native species.

I agree with Dreamer and Paladin, there are heaps of choices in this game, and the combat style is completly different from any other Star Wars game ever made.
This game truly kicks ass...

Cool, thanks. So I guess it's a "must-have" for any serious RPG player?

I'd go farther and say that anyone that hasn't completed KOTOR has not earned the right to be called a true RPG Gamer...

Amen father Luvian. This is a truly excellent game. I have yet to see a single person that didn't like it.

One word of warning about KOTOR: make sure you meet the system specifications, as the Bioware forum has a bunch of complaints (mine included) about the crashes in the game. I like the game, but can't play it anymore (I'm literally stuck at a point that the moment I get to a certain point, it crashes no matter what I do). All because my video card does not meet specification (and per my company, they are "working on the driver for it").

However, you will like the game. Good character development, great graphics and sound, good story. I'm not much into Star Wars and I like the game.

You need to meet the video card requirements, but you could play even if you are a little under some of the others, if you are willing to play with poorer graphics and special effects.

-Pointless Showoff-

Of course I have no problem, what with owning a P4 3GHZ with all the fancy stuff...

Can't remember what the official recommendations are wrt vid cards, but IIRC it supports an ATI Radeon 9200 SE (which is what I have) amongst others.

OK, time to grab a copy! Thanks for your feedback.
