Please could someone tell me what gems do, and how do you romance?

Some gems can be used to upgrade items and the rest can be sold (just to get gold and buy stuff).
Unless you are a half-orc romance will find you. Just wait a little. |

Don't remember the full list, not like I mind it either. But as an example, you can use a diamond to upgrade at one stage the 'specific' horn you find in one of the houses in Bridge District. You can later upgrade it even more with Beljuril Gem.
Some gems will be needed in ToB as well, some of those are common, some are special gems. In any case, simply sell the gems to some one specific vendor, later it's easier to buy them back. Might not work though if you sell them in SoA and then go over to ToB, but worth to try. If you do a search on these boards, then you might even find some topic on this issue, as I recall that it was posted by someone somewhere at some time, listing the gems and amount of those needed in SoA + ToB.
