what happened to race/level restrictions?

"back in the day" (2nd ed ad&d) the level limits imposed on nonhumans was a MAJOR factor when we would create characters. now i just realized that my elven fighter/thief in bg2 is levels 16/19 (xp cap is off). referring back to my dm guide it clearly states that an elf can only reach level 12 in either class and this is also dependent upon the prime req (18 for max level).

was this a mistake? was this rule taken out? was it amended?

either ways, does this not make playing a human far less desirable, especially considering the enormous xp/level in ToB?

They took out the idea of elves only get to a certain level because there lazy and the thing about age because it just wouldnt fit well into a videogame.

Humans, AFAIK, are still the only class that can dual-class, which is still a huge advantage. I always thought the advantages given to other races were pretty small anyway (one point of int, dex, wis, or constitution, but at a cost of another attribute)

Showing some grey hairs, are we? Well, I seem to recall that the boxed sets (now who's showing the grey hairs? ) limited dwarves to fighters or fighter/clerics, elves to fighter/mages, and halflings to thieves. Except for humans, who could be any class, those were your choices. Period.
