i was going to bye moorcocks Eternal champion series. But getting all 14 would cost to much, which are the best 4 of them?, or must they be read in order for better understanding? as i've heard the elric ones are quite good and i wouldnt be able to get them for a while as they are number 7 i think.

Well, there was a small thread ones long ago concerning this named: Michael Moorcock's best

This one's the most informative of the thread (from Djinn Raffo)
quote:
Hey imperial dwarf! Welcome!
Well I think that the Corum books are pretty good.
The Chronicles of Count Brass and the Hawkmoon books are good.
The Von Bek books are good.
Most of his books deal with various manifestations of the Eternal Champion, of which Elric is but one incarnation of millions. So if you enjoyed Elric, you will probably enjoy most of his other works.
The Chronicles of Jerry Cornelius are all right but different than the ones that take place in fantasy settings.
Blood is a good book, but a bit crazy.
If you enjoyed the Elric book Sailor on the Seas of Fate, particularly the first story of that book, then there are some other books you should check out. Sorry can not remember the names, but remember how Elric was with Erekose, Corum, and Hawkmoon and they all fought those entities from another universe called Agak and Gagak. Well in the sagas of those other warriors (Corum, Hawkmoon, and Erekose)Moorcock wrote the same story but from each of the specific Eternal Champions own eyes. The Hawkmoon one was in one of the Count Brass books I think. Again, sorry that i can't remember the names of the books. Over the weekend I will dig through my old book boxes (if i even still have them) and try to find out. Can't promise anything but stay tuned if your in the neighbourhood.
quote end

Check out the thread for there are three! other posts (makes for a total of four, impressive, huh? ).
As to the order I think it doesn't matter as long as you keep the internal order of the different series.
The best four now, well I don't know. Still searching for most of them myself. But Elric surely is one the best four.
Djinn Raffo, if you read this shame yourself! You broke your promise (see above)!
by the way Dramnek_Ulk a NICE signature!

You don't really have to read them in order, although for ones that use the same main character, I'd recommend it. There are 2 Corum (Corum: The Coming of Chaos and Corum: The Prince with the Silver Hand), 2 Elric (Elric: Song of the Black Sword and Elric: The Stealer of Souls, and two Hawkmoon (Hawkmoon, Count Brass is mostly Hawkmoon as well, supposedly)). Books about the same lead character I'd recommend reading in order. Keep in mind that most of these tales were written as short stories for various magazines. They've been assembled here, but they aren't exactly in the order they are written. Plus quite a few of the stories don't really have anything to do with the Eternal Champion. This is really more a collection of works by Moorcock then a massive series. Still, a few of them do relate to each other... some even include the same tale, just told from the viewpoint of a different character.

Myself, I'm only up to book 11 (and still need to get 10), been getting them as they come out in the large trade paperbacks.

My views on them:
The Eternal Champion (vol 1): good book.

Von Bek (vol 2): 2 of the 3 tales are good, 3rd one gets a little too psychological for me. The Von Bek tales do tend to involve christian artifacts and sometimes the keeping of those from Nazi's. The first tale (and the best) in the book doesn't though. It tells of the guy from Vol 1.

Hawkmoon (vol 3): Good book, easy reading.

A Nomad of the Time Streams (vol 4): sort of Wells-type sci-fi... 1940's with blimps instead of planes, this one does make a quasi-reference to the Von Beks (volume 2), but you don't really lose anything but not having read volume 2. This one is one of my favorites.

Elric: Song of the Black Sword (vol 5): Dark, somber, intense. A bit harder to read than the others, due to the wording and style, but overall, one of the best with probably the best defined character.

The Road Between Worlds (vol 6): sci-fi stuff, some of it psychological. Has some good tales, and some not too good. Doesn't really refer to the eternal champion.

Corum: The Coming of Chaos (vol 7): Pretty good book. His second most famous character.

Sailing to Utopia (vol 8): more Sci-fi type stuff. Has some good tales. And some not too great.

Kane of Old Mars (vol 9): a Borrough's tribute, he's the guy that created Tarzan. Easy reading, one of the shorter of the books. Basically swash-buckling type adventure. Light-fare.

Elric: The Stealer of Souls (vol 11): easier reading than the first Elric. Finishes off his tale. Good reading.

And that's about all I can tell you

If I had to get just 4... hmmm... well, both Elric's, the first Corum, and The Eternal Champion would be my choices. I'd read them in the order of Vol 1, then the 2 Elric's, and finally Corum. Those are the most classic, deal the most with the eternal champion.

After those 4, I'd have to go with Von Bek, A Nomad of the Time Streams (personal fav), and Kane of Old Mars, and Hawkmoon. Of course, by that time, they'll hopefully have the remaining 4 books out and I'll own all 15.

Hope that helps.

Hello

I'm sorry imperial dwarf... ...
I really did look through back then...found Quest for Tanelorn. It's third book in chronicles of Count Brass...i have two copies...one the Berkley with Robert Gould cover and the other this wild 1975 one with a crazy cover...

One section of this book is that sequence from Sailor on Seas of Fate when the Four Incarnations fight Agak and Gagak. Through Hawkmoons eyes as Sailor was through Elrics. Could not find any of my Corum books. And can't remember the same tale for him or Erekose.

Well I read two of those recent publications...the Eternal Champion\Erekose one and the Von Bek one. The Eternal Champion one had an awesome cover...think it was by Yoshitaka Amano... I thought both were good. But i'll always buy the old ones. It seems like every used book store has Moorcock and lots of the older publications are small and real cheap. I usually stick to these ones.

My favorite books are the Corum, Hawkmoon, and Elric ones. Sailor on Seas of Fate is probably my favorite single book written by Moorcock. The first story is absolutly amazing (thats the Agak and Gagak story). The second is awesome IMHO Smiorgan's cool. And the third features some pretty fantastic scenery and is the least good of the three...but still good.

The nice things about the series though is that it is mostly complete (no need to track down tons of books), in order (saves some more research), and, well, looks impressive all lined up in the bookcase

The Elric novels are what you would call a must read for Moorcock, because he is the most famous character Moorcocks created and he is first Eternal Champion. There are also a few new (past few years at least) novels on his adventures. After that I recommend Corum, good read plus good supporting Characters.

If you want something totatly diffrent Glorantha the unfufilled Queen.
