Is there is a certain trick for using the spell, because every time I use it I wind up hitting my own characters or I will try to get the other parts of the party away from the person casting the fireball; then the person casting it gets all beat up on.

Not if you stand out of the bad guys' sight range and aim it right in front of them. If your Tank is up there duking it out with them, of course he's going to get fried by it. Only use party-friendly spells, like Sleep and Horror, in that situation. (Unless your Tank has really good Saving Throws, in which case you can also use things like Stinking Cloud.)

No trick really just it is better to cast at the ground a certain distance from your party rather than a target. Else you will end up being toast it takes a little getting used to the appropriate distance to cast it. Another trick is to have a person with stealth scout ahead to determine if there are any creatures. Cast a fireball just in fron of the creatures and move your cloaked person back.

The only advice for getting use to casting the spell is:

Practice!Practice!Practice!

Protection From Fire. It comes in many forms. Use them.

The wand of fire has a semi-hidden second ability to cast aganazar's scorcher as opposed to the f.b. Use the scorcher when you only have one enemy, or you are better off taking out the enemy one-by-one, which is usually the case.

What I've never quite understood is that a wand of fire can cast either fireball or agannazar's scorcher; fireball is, in my opinion, the better of the two, yet uses up only one charge, while agannazar's scorcher uses up two. Also, fireball is level 3, while the latter is level 2. Then again, I probably just have too much time on my hands.

The version of the Scorcher in the wand is an extra strenght version dealing 6-36 points - whereas the lvl 2 spell deals 3-18 points.

From the manual, the Fireball Spell has a Area of effect radius of 20 feet (6.09 meters) If you're going to cast the spell, pause the game, judge your distance, and let it go. Of course, if the monsters are closing on you, they will probably be right on top of you before you finish the cast time of the spell. (If using the spell from memory, not from a wand).

Unless you're under a 'Protection from Fire' scroll, you'll most likely never cast this spell directly at the enemy. As it's area-effect, cast it near them, not at them. They only need to be within the blast radius of the fireball for the critters to get fried.

Of course, the same is not true with Arrows of Detonation.

My habit of normally running two mage parties has allowed me to acquire a new skill. I find that i can eyeball the distance between my party and the foes that I am currently fighting and place a fireball behind my enemies so that the outeredges burn the foes but not the Tanks with which they are engaged in melee with.
