I'm at the beginning and Aspel the scrimshaw guy wants me to kill the wolf in his shop. He broke the key off in the lock. I don't have a thief, only a bard. I can't force the door. Does this mean a thief is required? TIA.

It isnt necessary. The door is very easy to budge, actually. Dont be surprised if it doesnt open at first, try several times. If this doesnt work after a few minutes, reload your game and repeat until it opens. Stronger characters have a higher chance of busting doors if you didnt know.
