Sorry about all the dual-class questions lately but I gotta ask. I heard somewhere that you have to be a certain alignment to dual-class to whatever your dual-classing to, is that right? And, WHEN to dual-class? I hear someone who says lvl 6 and someone lvl23. I`m planning to play BG2 and TOB with this character. But if i`m going to lvl23 and starting over again as a mage lvl1, wouldn`t that be difficult? And, will i reach lvl23 as a mage before end of the game?Btw i`m dualclassing a fighter to a conjurer.
Hope someone can answer at least some of the questions, thanks=) |

The only alignment restrictions I am aware for dual-classing is if you want to dual class TO a druid. In that case, your original character must have a TRUE NEUTRAL alignment. Not Lawful Neutral, not Neutral evil .. absolute true neutral. Your dighter dualled to a conjuror would NOT have alignment restrictions.
As to WHEN to dual, that is a much more subjective choice. Some people dual fighters at 7th level to get the extra attack, others do it at 9 when you stop getting 10hp + con bonus (max hitpoints as it were), while others do it at 13th to get yet again an extra attack. I don't recall the xp cap from SOA / TOB. The easiest way to test it though is check out the manual. There are a number of xp tables by level for each class. Mage should require the most xp to hit 40th level (cap for TOB). The tables will give you your answer. If the total combined xp for a 23rd lvl fighter AND a 23rd level mage is LESS than the xp for a 40th level mage then YES you will be able to do what you are planning. I just can't tell you off the top of my head about dualing a fighter at 23rd level and then making 23rd as a fighter without those tables in front of me.

BTW, I assume that you meant to post this in either the Shadows of AMn or TOB message board. Because there is NO way to get to 23rd level in ANY class in Baldurs Gate 1 even with TotSC added - UNLESS you have used an xp editor / cap remover.

Thanks Micah! I know that I won`t reach lvl 23 in BG1. Posted the question here because I think most of the experienced players here also have played BG2/TOB, but maybe i should post it in the other forum too. Cya!

Just checked out the xp tables and you can't do what you want. Dualling a fighter at 23rd level means that the fighter would be at 3,750,000 xp and the xp requirements for the mage are 4,875,000 xp. The sum of these two exceeds the 8 million xp cap in TOB.
In order to get a mage to 23rd level, you must dual your fighter to a mage NO LATER than 20th level.

I dont think you can dual to a Conjurer. I think you can only dual to a mage, cuz technically the conjurer is a kit and you can only dual to solid classes, not kits.

quote: You can't dual to a kit, in that aspect you are right. But this doesn't apply to specialist mages. I dualed Imoen to a conjurer once, so i know it is possible.

quote: Dark Side spoiler herein: I've often wondered what the highest level that could be reached is, since there is a limit to the experience that the game can offer. Once you get into the teens the gaps between levels are enormous(although perhaps the AI then just gives you more XP for your kills). If you solo or play with a small party of 2-4 you would get mopre XP of course. At times I have considered trying to solo through BG1/Tales/Dark Side and do everyting there is to be done in the game, just to see what level I would finish at. But that is more work than I care to do (I now find the 'lawnmowing' style of play where you clear every map tedious). The first time I played DS and I took a group of paladins and completed everything outside of BG city. Unfortunately they got the sh*t level drained out of them, so I'll never know how high they would have gotten if they had cast the proper protective spells prior to fighting vampires. (I figured that if Team BG was going put level draining vampires into the game they would also include the restoration spell--but they did not!)

Lemernis,
Does Dark Side have NO cap limit or simply a limit set SO high that 40th level characters are possible? (I recall seeing something on the Teambg site that implied the latter). I should have ammended my post to exclude the DsotSC mod.
