I thought I would try a warrior type since I usualy only play as mages. This halfling has 17 str, 19 dex, and 18 dex with low other stats. 10 int, 11 wis and I think around 8 charisma. So far he took out the Circus Tent and the Keep. He's around level eight or nine and has ring of protection +1, ring of earth control, belt of piercing and a spear +1. He has four stars in spear, 1 in dagger and two in two handed fighting.

I am looking for suggestions on what sort of spears and other equipment I can find. Are there any really good spears I should get before heading to rescue Imoen? I'm looking for one of at least +3 caliber. Also what sort of dagger would be good? I'm putting some points into dagger so I'll be able to use Firetooth when enemies are far away. What other sort of equipment is good for a Kensai? And which quests would be best to do next in order to get this good equipment.

Any help would be helpful.

off the top of my head i think the really good spears come later but if you're after item spoilers there are loads right here

http://www.flatface.net/~itemsmart/magic_items_menu.htm

Edit: If you want to avoid looking at that Joluv (the bonus merchant in Copper Coronet) has a +3 spear apparently - i don't count retail adverts as spoilers

good effort by the way spears aren't the obvious power choice as you know (they don't have other magical effects like swords do for instance)

kensai equipment-wise you only have one choice to get negatve plane protection (which you probably already know about - it's a weapon) so you might well want that unless you're roleplaying only carrying spears!

shield amulet is a must

boots of speed are your friend

like i said earlier there are swords you could carry that give you mirror image, haste, free action, restistance to charm etc. useful but not spears

you're only doing piercing damage - some enemies have quite high resistance i think and clay golems will laugh in your face while simultaneoulsy smashing it in for you (not a bad trick) - again this might be a 'roleplaying' choice but i'd be inclined to put a point in 'staff'

if you get get hold of as many 'summoning' items as you can that would be useful (spider, bottle, horn, heml)

nothing else obvious i don't think - enjoy

The Shield Amulet from the De'Arnise Keep is a keeper, I'd suggest using that.

As for spears, there's a decent one in the Druid Grove outside Trademeet, and another good one (or more) inside the Guarded Compound.

Three of the best daggers in the game (IMHO) are:

1) Stilleto of Demarchess (Planar Sphere)
2) Torgal's Claw (De'Arnise Keep)
3) Pixie Prick (Astral Prison)

Each of these has extra abilities that work well against many opponents.

Happily, you don't need to have any proficiency points invested in a weapon if all you're using it for is for temporary resistance to Charm, or the ability to cast Mirror Image, or suchlike. Which brings me to a related point: Two-handed weapons aren't really recommended for solo characters (especially if they have a lot of other equipment restrictions, as the Kensai does), because it limits the amount of protective items you can wear. The Impaler is a great spear, but using it means that you can't have, say, the Defender of Easthaven in your offhand.

Only if you have Tactics installed, which Jorsh does not mention. I find it unlikely that a person who would ask "What sort of equipment is good for a Kensai?" would pit a Solo Halfling Kensai against the Tactics mod.

Also:

There is an amazingly good spear in the Sahaguin city (I think) and you'd be surprised what kind of equipment drow merchants sell.

Be sure to check the Trademeet merchant...Belt of Inertial barrier....ohhhhhh baby.

I know but I'm trying to resist the temptation of walking round with a rack of weapons 'just on the off chance' at the moment - i'm trying to stick to a reasonable array of two swords, one bow, one staff and a small shield - still probably overdoing it 'realism' wise but just about accpetable i reckon if you imagine that you mainly carry the staff.

Maybe a bit too much of a personal quirk for the original poster to be worried about and i take your point that if you need to ask about kensai equipment you're brave to solo one!
