Managed to uninstall the game for two months before I gave in to it again, so here I am sitting in front of the computer and I have decided that I will go through as a Sorcerer (because I have heard good things about them).
After I finish it this time I am going to solo it, this should be interesting. Any advice?

Have you gone through with a mage yet shadowhound? Or better yet, if challenged to could you solo a mage? Sorc.'s can be a real challenge if you don't know how to handle a mage yet. (hence my lack of sorceror creations.)

If soloing spellcasters pick an alignment which will give you a familiar that has the kind of thief skills that you want.

I'm doing a solo bard and it is fun, but it is also quite challenging. I've managed to clear Level 1 of the Chateau, including beating Improved Ilyich and crew all by my lonesome. I didn't even use the acorns until it was just the Glabrezu and I - and I just couldn't finish him off without that extra help.

The one problem I've run into are the spawning Duergar party members. I can defeat them, but it takes almost all of my spells each time - and that includes hitting the fighter with a Dire Charm and sending him after the mage. Bad thing is that it doesn't always work and sometimes I've ended up facing as many as FOUR fighters!!! I only have about 4 duergar left in Level 1 that I haven't killed, but I'm almost completely out of spells, so I would have to rest before facing them, which will spawn two more duergar, which will use up more spells, which will mean I have to rest again, which means two more duergar, etc etc.

So I've decided to leave the ones that aren't killed yet and go on up to Level 2. I am going to allow Yoshimo to join me, but ONLY so that we can RETURN to Level 1 and pick up all of those nifty mage robes I've gathered. I have quite a pile of them in the Sewage Room. I will give these to Yoshimo, then send him on out of the dungeon and meet him at the Copper Coronet once I finish the Chateau.

Of course, I will have to get the BUGS worked out of my game before I can do ANY of this.

BTW, I chose the Skald Kit because of the +1 bonus to hit and damage with ALl weapons. I'm not sure that was such a good idea, though, because I still miss an awful lot in melee. And since I'm going solo, I have to divide my spells about half and half between offensive and defensive. If I could just go with pure offensive spells, I could probably kill things a lot more efficiently, but I wouldn't be able to stand up to many attacks from those I didn't kill. Still, the Lore is awfully nice. Pick up an item, look at it and say "Oh Yeah, this item does THIS." That is pretty cool, so there are some advantages to playing the bard.

If you want a Bard take a Blade. He can be a great fighter, thief and a mage.

*sigh* Why do so many people still persist in thinking Bards are Fighters, Thieves, and Mages rolled into one?

Bards are not Fighters--they can't wear armor, they can't drink Warrior potions, they don't have hitpoints, they don't have Saving Throws, they don't have THAC0, and they don't have ApR.

Bards are not Thieves--getting a watered-down version of the single least useful Thieving skill does not make one a Thief.

Bards are, however, Mages--Level 15 Mages who can't cast a damn thing beyond Level 6, or wear Mage Robes, or use Mage-only gear.

I can approximate a Bard by taking a Level 2 Thief, putting all his points into Pick Pockets, then Dualing him to Mage, getting him to Level 16, and Level Draining him so that he can't gain EXP ever again. That's a Bard. When somebody gives a class such a lame advantage as "High Lore," you know they're only doing it because the class sucks moldy fish poo.

Ouch, Six! Someone's a classist! (Kinda like racist, but against a class, instead). (Takes on consoling manner) "It's ok, Bards, Six didn't mean all that. We all think it's very nice that you know what everything is!"

Blades are a whole different story though. They resemble more something like the fighter/mages, and they make up for a dualled fighter/mage by the high level gain.
