Some people may think differently to what I am about to say, but this is just my opinion. Despite the fact that I am going to "question" the combat side of BG, it is still an extremely awesome game.

Basically, to keep it short, the combat is unrealistic. It's sort of... well, creatures just take it in turns to hit each other. For example, Minsc is fighting a vampire:

Minsc does 11 damage to Vampire
Minsc does 9 damage to Vampire
Vampire does 13 damage to Minsc

And so on...
There's no action such as offensive fighting, defensive fighting or, which I think is most important, BLOCKING. When fighting people don't just stand and take it in turns to hit each other, the defender standing motionless and hoping that his armour holds out the blow. Has anyone seen that Harry Enfield sketch show with the gladiators? If so, you know what I mean.

I don't mean to offend anyone with this (If I have, sorry), for I actually LOVE BG. It's just that combat in all RPG's, not just BG, are like this. Are there any games which have 'real' combat?

That`s probably becuase it is FRP. Fantasy Role Playing Game,i don`t know really. It`s just the way it is. if you want "real" combat try Operation:Flashpoint or something like this.
So in FRP`s you have a hard time finding a game wich has combat system "real".

This actually was my point with Drizzt. because the combat system is like this, he is not as powerful a fighter as he should be according to the books. Big bummer...

Drizzt is not powerful. He is over-powered.

I agree. Blocking and dodging is something that this engine sorely lacks. But, it has healing potions to mend it. Drizzt has quaffed only two of those in his entire life (IIRC), not counting those in the Baenre cellars.

Drizzt (in novels) is very nimble, so he can evade or intercept eg. Jarlaxle's daggers. In the game, dexterity attribute does improve armor class, but only a few points (-4 for 18). It should lower it to at least zero, IMHO.

PS. I've played Neverwinter Nights for a while (a few hours), and I noticed that my character often blocks or dodges an incoming attack. I cannot testify if that skill raises as the character grows stronger, or if it is just an eye candy.

BGII is more magic oriented, the dodging is harder and AC is less important than in IWD I & II.

Yes I noticed that too. I think it`s not an eye candy.

NWNs combat animations are just eye-candy, they dont affect the result at all and are driven by the same rules as IWD2 combat. That said, they do make the game look more realistic, up to a point anyway.
