Man, this is great! I'm learning more and more as time goes by. I can't find Drizzt! I've read the information telling me that he is SSW of the road between Beregost and Nashkel. I also read that he would be fighting some gnolls and would ask for help. I've scoured the countryside on both sides of the road. I also went into the next screen over and then from there south (this all has been great for my party - new places and some cool items. In the area east of the gnoll fortress, I killed a camp of the little annoying bald headed whatever they are; but just a hundred feet NE of there is a very dark cliff face with a door. I have only four people at third level ( how the hell do you find a mage, non-evil, to join your party ), should I go to the fortress first? I can't wait untill I get strong enough to kill those two clowns in Beregost - Silke ( killed me with a lightning bolt, oh boy when I get the cash for that protection from lightning scroll ), and that surly Ruskie mage on the bridge. Love those slow bears for good xp. Thanks for all the great info'.

From what I can see you're searching too far to the south. Try a few maps higher.
As to the good alignem magi, you can either rescue Dynaheir from the gnoll fortress or visit the Nashkell mines.

Dynaheir is a diviner, and can be found in the second pit in the Gnoll fortress. You'll have to go down into the pit in order to be able to see her.
At the lowest level of the mines you'll find Xan, an elven enchanter. Just walk past Mullahey's room and you'll see him.

I havent any problems with Silke at lv2 -any time
Dont allow her to cast anything. The best fighter engages her, and rest of your party use ranged weapons/magic missile. Sometimes she tries to cast Horror or sth. like this - so place your NPCs far from each other

Dynaheir is an Invoker not a Diviner. And Xan is Lawful Neutral, but still a worthwhile addition to a good-aligned party.

Anyway Drizzt can be found south of some big lake. Area west-nort of Nashkel.
