I just started playing the game, I'm at the Nashkel mines and I've got a few games, namely a Jasper Gem and Zircon Gem. Is there any use for these at this point other than selling them for gold?

Other than a few very times, (you'll know them when you get to them) there is no use for gems in Baldurs Gate.

Indeed, I cannot recall any real moment where gems served any purpose aside from being sold and lining my pockets with gold.

They're meant to take away space.
...
And they're shiny... oooh, shiny!

Occasionaly someone will ask you to retrieve a certain type of gem or jewlery, but that's it.

In live AD&D, gems are a lot more portable stores of value than gold. But in BG, Gold doesn't encumber you.

As Seraph mentioned, there are only a couple of places where you need a particular gem. I don't want to post a spoiler, so I won't say which type or where/when you'll need them. Just go buy one when asked for one. Otherwise, sell them for gold.
