If I take a character who is in both BG1 and BG2 and then use a tome on them while in BG1, when I import my game into BG2, will they still have the bonus from the tome?

On your PC yes, but if you use one on an NPC you lose the bonus. If your a purist your stuck with that, but most people would justify cheating the bonus back in.

Warning: I recently found out that if you use the exported character that you get after you beat Sarevok (and the game), you loose the bonuses by the tomes!

Agh! It doesn't matter anymore, I just remembered you can't dual-class an elf. Ah, well.
