OK, that seemed to recover it. I believe the reason I got the deep6 error is because before I had to CTL-ALT-DEL out of game because I couldn't see anything and that's when it happened.

Any idea...

Yep...the game is a mess. Obviously was pushed out the door far, far too early. In fact, many are drawing comparisons to Pool of Radiance and Temple of Elemental Evil. It really IS that bad folks....

Seems like the patch fixes some bugs (that if you know how to avoid aren't a huge deal) and the non-patched version allows more...
