Is it worth assembling/keeping it? I read somewhere that what makes a Vorpal Blade special, is the fact that wich each hit, there's a chance that the target is instantly killed, with no saving throw....

Use Silence 15' radius on the mages or, like LennonCook said, Insect Plague. They won't be able to cast any spells anymore, so you can turn them into mince-meat easily (and get some XP as well) ;)
