Champs to lose Cup start
Sportal

World governing body FIFA has announced that next year’s World Cup champions won’t get an automatic start in the 2006 competition.

"We've taken quite an historic decision today. The champion of Korea/Japan 2002 will not be automatically qualified. This is new and even brand new," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.

Blatter said the decision was made to allow the winners of the Cup to have a more ideal and intensive preparation with more official matches, rather than friendlies, while it will also free up one more qualifying spot in the finals in the lead up.

Meanwhile Blatter has cast doubt over the future of the Confederations Cup competition, saying the governing body is having trouble finding a place for it on a new unified international calendar.

"We might replace the Confederations Cup with the World Club Championship from 2003,” Blatter said.

“In 2003 there will be four world championships: the Under-17 in Finland, the Under-20 in the United Arab Emirates, the Women's World Cup in China and the Confederations Cup.”

"We need to conduct an in-depth study on the possibility of replacing the Confederations Cup with the World Club Championship because the Confederations Cup is already on track with our economic partners, sponsors and broadcasters.”

"Of course the 2001 World Club Championship was cancelled because of the bad market following the bankruptcy of ISL. But with so many competitions we have to find a solution for the 2002 World Club Championship and one idea is for it to replace the Confederations Cup."

The competition began in Saudi Arabia in 1992 as the Intercontinental Championship, and was contested by national teams that won their continental championships, with South Korea and Japan hosting the last instalment several months ago as warm-up to next year’s World Cup finals.

This is bad news, because we're going to win it this time.

That extra spot would be the one they have been looking for to grant the Oceania champions an automatic qualifying place .

Oh, and the Manx U defeat - music to the ears
