Hurricane Ivan hits Jamaica; looting in Kingston

Hurricane Ivan has arrived in Jamaica, where the government has declared a state of emergency. Trees have been uprooted by the hurricane, and there is a power blackout. Looters are roaming the streets of the capital Kingston. Rescue workers have been robbed at gunpoint. The authorities had asked half a million residents of the coastal regions to leave their homes. However, many people ignored the appeal.

In Grenada, where the hurricane struck earlier, soldiers are patrolling the streets in an effort to prevent looting. The authorities say at least 17 people were killed and around 90 percent of Grenada's buildings damaged or destroyed.

Many areas lack drinking water and electricity. Grenada's government has made an urgent appeal to the international community for assistance. Ivan has left a trail of devastation in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Trinidad and Barbados, and killed at least 27 people.
