1. Hide in shadows
2. move BEHIND your enemy 3. pick a weapon that is suitable for backstab (longsword, dagger, short sword,...) 4. attack 5. run, hide again

If you want in the scripts there is a choice that will have your pc look to backstab whenever they can.

Isn't it kinda strange that long swords and KATANAS are considered suitable for Backstabbing?
I mean I can understand the short sword but Katana?????

you can backstab with any one-handed weapon usable by thieves, including the staff mace. not sure if clubs, work, though, since it is kinda ridiculous to be backstabbing with a big stick. oh well. you can be invisible, as well, not necessarily hiding in the shadows. Furthermore, you cannot hide if any enemy can see you, (blind ones can't) and you get a bonus if you are in shadows when you hide. invisibility potions are highly recommended for thieves relying on backstabs. (solo assassins [ahem]) stock up on them.

Do you have to have proficiency in the weapon for a backstab to be effective? I'm having a HUGE problem getting Valygar to backstab. I KNOW you can't backstab with his katana, so I've been trying with a dagger. No dice. My only thought is that you have to have proficiency with daggers, which he does not, or there is a bug in the program (macintosh). My other stalker backstabs just fine.
