Since I've started using Adaware www.lavasoft.com I haven't had a problem. Since I've started using my router's MAC filters I haven't had a problem either.

BTW, to get rid of almost all spyware, gator etc., use a different browser than IE. Opera, Mozilla or whatever.

Register cleaners do not, by chance, fix your registry as well? Because I'm suffering from a corrupted/incomplete/whatever-could-be-wrong-with-the-damn-thing registry.

Download Mozilla 1.4, it's akickass browser and has a built-in popup-stoper to boot.
I also use Adaware, spybot s&d, and Zone Alarm - a potent combo.

Ronn I think I have the program lying around my drive somewhere. I believe t is still available on the net even though the new jv16 is out. Do a google and you'll end up with several German sites (just did one). Try one of those and don't worry, it will be the English version. If you can't find it I'll email it to you when I get home this afternoon.

I haven't used the basic RegCleaner in awhile because I've been using Powertools. Does 4.3 identify the items that are safe to remove like Powertools? That was the single feature of Powertools I switched cleaners in order to get. EDIT - It doesn't show a green vs. red safety factor. It does say that "these items should be safe to remove". Do you allow it to remove all those or just the ones you are familiar with? The hard thing is all the keys that I have no idea about. EDIT 2 - I found an old jv16 by looking for jv16 1.3 on Google. Now I can compare. [ 10-23-2003, 09:37 AM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

Well I usually removes all the things regcleaner lists and I have never encountered any problems in doing so. Should you however find that you have removed something essential, boot up in safe mode, start regcleaner and restore the backups.
The one thing I really disliked with JV16 is that it sometimes lists essential keys to be safe to remove. But then I like to remove my old keys from the software tab since it does a great job completely uninstalling programs.

I'm going to start using it again. What about all the options? I know it's best not to mess with things I don't understand, but I have to wonder about the OCX Tools? With the OLE should I use normal or extra powerful?
You can probably see why the registry is a dangerous place for me to play... lots of curiousity, very little skill.
