Sorry, sorry, I meant carbonic/phosphoric acid, not citric! Citric acid is in fruits! Oops!

PS: Yes, I did quote myself.

"The fact is that all carbonated soft drinks contain carbonic acid, which is moderately useful for tasks such as removing stains and dissolving rust deposits (although plain soda water is much better for such purposes than Coca-Cola or other soft drinks, as it doesn't leave a sticky sugar residue behind). "

that is from snopes. as a once fast food employee i can totally agree, we used to use plain soda water for cleaning the grill. worked much better than water itself. so if you have something tough to scrape off, get some seltzer water!

p.s. nathan has experimented with ground beef before, it doesn't totally make it go away but it does eat away at it

Actually tests show that coca-cola is a very bad sperm-killer .. doesnt do a thing really. A little bit if you let it sit still, if you allow it to move nothing happens.

Also, willowIX, since your body has buffers, arent there any in your stomach linings as well ? IIRC, there are, which should nullify the effect of the phosphoric acid ... Feel free to enlighten me though

Well, since the stomach use acid to digest food anyway, I doubt that coke will cause much short-term damage to the lining. What is it the stomach contains, hydrochloric? One of the stronger ones anyway.

Well, when it's a choice between coke and *shudder* pepsi, what else are you meant to choose?

I always wanted to test the old wives tale that if you left a nail in coca cola for a week it would be disolved by the acids.....wonder if this is true and how big a nail and how much coca cola?

Well at least Pepsi is less acidic But honestly I think RC Cola (Royal Crown) strikes a nice balance between cokes acid and pepsi's sweetness....

Pepsi is USELESS. It loses the fizz within SECONDS, and has NO flavour. I go thirsty at school 'cause it's eithe rpepsi or nothin', then buy a Dr. Pepper on the way home
(Am not supposed to drink fizzies-brace. Oopps )

Think about it for a moment Daan. Buffers in your stomach wouldn´t really be beneficial would they? The mucosa secretes a slightly alkalive mucus that give some protection. But the pH scale is logarithmic so a drop in pH by 0,1 you get a milieu that is twice as acidious. Phosphoric acid is also a "real" acid. Not much nicer than hydrocloric acid. Carbonic acid isn´t that dangerous but citric acid can be. Remember that you are mixing three acids, not just the one.

And since coke does contain acid it is capable of cleaving proteins. Therefore it should be possible to dissolve a (very small!) piece of meat or a tooth. Especially teeth are sensitive to acid as I`m sure we all know.

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It's pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

Yes yes very interesting
do those people realise you have HCl in your stomach???
FYI HCl 1 molair HCl has pH of 1 and will dissolve a nail in 2 days top
we need something to kill bacteria dont we?
