LOL!! Sometimes I can be fast! These days I feel like I'm the slow one. Most posts seem to come in the evening when I have gone offline and I'm generally the last to welcome a new player to the board or answer some question.

When the board was far more busy there used to be sort of an undeclared contest to see who would be the first to reply and often the times would be exactly the same! Haven't seen that in a while.

What is weird about wanting to welcome a new poster to the board? It wasn't a big competition - more a celebration that there were active posters helping others and that posts could end up being seconds apart! The winner, of course, was the person who posted the question! I'm all for that!

Imagine walking into a new school, LiOnHe@rT, and the first time you said something, fourteen people looked at you funny, called you a fool, and humiliated you for saying something so stupid. Would you ever come back?

Now imagine that you tentatively raised your hand to ask a question, and fourteen people not only answered it, but welcomed you in, invited you to sit with them at lunch, and made sure that you were taken care of. Would you ever come back then?

What I (and many others) do is simply to recognize that there's someone new in town, and to welcome them and invite them in to join the fun. Many people will stay around much longer if they feel they're wanted and that the folks around here are friendly. And the more posters we have, the more fun we can have (even with silly threads that say "Don't click on me").

Is there a competition? Not that I've seen, but Wyv's been around this longer than I have. Do I get a personal thrill when I'm the first person to welcome a new poster? Well... yeah, I do. But that's healthy (I hope). I also get a kick out of simply joining the group welcome, too.

Because for me, the first and most important rule of gaming is to....
