The law states for every piece of illegal software (including programs obtained through Kazaa) you have to pay a $50 fine for each one. For some people, it's lible to make them go broke. But seriously, how could they target someone? If you have your files backed on another hard-drive, they out of luck.
Well it's like I said, it's very hard for them to identify individuals anyway. If you download something then don't share it, in theory no one will know you ever had it (except the person you downloaded it from).

I don't think Kazaa etc. should be shut down though - there are many legitimate users. Many people download one or two tracks off an album and then buy the album if they like it. Also, think of modding communities for games. Half-life, Baldur's Gate 2, NWN etc. all have/had thriving modding communities - just think of the mod distribution potential of Kazaa. Think how much money distributors can save on bandwidth costs if they let people download free stuff from each other's hard drives instead of all from the same site.

Device drivers and game patches could also be distributed this way saving bandwidth thus money for companies who might then lower software costs....possibilities are endless and trying to ban such ingenious ideas as P2P is stupid.

As people have said MANY times the answer lies in 2 things: lower costs in stores and micro-payments over the web : the system of charging you for single tracks (this way people are more likely to pay for that one song)to your mobile phone bill (no credit card transactions involved). You simply enter your mobile number, get sent a text, type in the code you got sent and then you get what you paid for.

Well, you have to take some things into consideration. If, (big if here) if Kazaa is by some chance shut down, then there will just be another group of people out there that make another music program and spread it across the net. Think about it, there are millions of people and billions of files and they're attempting to locate them all which is well near impossible to do. It's just wasting them money they most likely don't have and it probably won't work either.

You know I can not remember the last time I listened to the radio in a car or at home for that matter. The music is horrible. I tuned into a alternative station one day and all I heard was this cross breed of rap and rock. It sucked and I would not even steal it off the net. I put in pink floyd and tried to forget the experience.

The music today is so negative on both sides of the fence. All about being depressed, angry, or just stupid. I would rather watch paint dry.

Maybe I just grew up

Take A real good look at the music put out from the year 2000 up to today in 2003,60% of the music recorded in that time period sucked or was just a remake of older music. The way I see the music industry of today is, it sucks. Yes some of the music put out during that time was really good but the rest wasn't worth pissing on let alone going out and buying! so rather than going out and finding new Tallent they just go after the internet. The music industry needs to wake up and smell the roses their industry is going into the dumper they charge to much for the crap thats out their now and its isn't worth even 1/2 of what they charge so now everyone is trading music on the internet that is played for free over the radio. The Key word here is trading not selling there is no law that says you can't trade music with someone else for free the music industry tried to stop the sale of cassette recorders in the 70's because people could copy music from their friends for free and they lost that fight just like they are loosing this fight. Greed is an awful thing.
Mate you are so way off the mark. Instead of replying though I'll direct you to this discussion we only recently had.

Or look harder to discover the brilliant new music being created every day. It's not hard to find music that speaks to todays generation that is of incredible quality. For me, music just keeps getting better and better.

You're just looking in the wrong places if you're making a statement like "The music today is.....all about being depressed angry or just stupid."

In any case, subjectively not liking a product is no excuse for stealing that product. "It sucks so I won't pay for it".

I was in a bar in Brooklyn at 1am last night and heard some of the most incredible music I've ever heard, from a variety of artists.

They gotta do something. I've had to change careers retail music is so bad, but I blame the record industry and retailers for creating their own downfall by inflating prices while they have champagne breakfasts. Over 500 music stores closed in The U.S. this year, a number that grows each year. Sad!

Music cd's overpriced, mismanaged, artists and consumers getting ripped off and over 40 record execs with pony tail catering for the lowest common denomanator.

This whole industry need a BBB *bloody big bomb* going through it. NOW!

As yorick states, there is good music being created. There is a demand for music, just look at all the pirate - kazza stuff. So why have the music companies got themselves into this mess? inept managment is my answer

Well, another problem is, that has been mentioned before, that you can never be at fault. You just say I got it off him...because the description of the file stays the same when you have it. So the person who spread it first is, like, a few months away, maybe.

a few years ago, when i was still only little, Singles in england cost about Ł2. i always thought that was a reasonable amount even though i only got about Ł2.50 a week (i was only really little though). on that single you'd get the titled track and usually a couple of other songs. these days its Ł4 for 1 song. now i have the choice. do i spend Ł4 on 1 song that i might only ever listen to once or do i buy a tub of ben and jerrys and enjoy the moment. hard choice huh?
