Just got back from the Hospital. For the last couple of days I've had a persistant headache, abdominal pain, and fever. Today I started getting a dull ache in my jaw, under my ears and then developed a rash that didn't go away when examined under a glass... a guy I went to school with and a past teacher of mine both died of meningitis. Needless to say the combination of symptoms freaked me out somewhat.

But apparently its the wrong kind of rash that won't go away. So they don't know what I've got, but its probably a virus. And it'll probably go away at some point. The worst part of this is that I got my dad out of bed to give me a lift to the hospital and there's probably nothing wrong with me. Fortunately neither him nor me have work to do tomorrow, but would you want to be up until 4.30am in a hospital waiting room?

The thing is that I just don't need this now. I can't handle it all. I want to continue study in political theory and if I want to do that then I have to sort out all my applications out pretty soon. And if I want to do that I have to find funding, which has to be sorted out even sooner. My mates are annoyed with me because I'm not pushing the boat out for my 21st, which is coming up. My socialist comrades are annoyed at me because I can't spare the time to run for the National Union of Students Conference. My dad is annoyed at me because I'm spending too much money (I live on soup and bread for ****s sake!). My mum is annoyed at me because I'm not coming home for long over Christmas, because I have work to do to pay off the student debt dad's so worried about. My class teachers are all annoyed at me as I have essays due next week I haven't started. , which I can't start yet as I'm ill and I have to attempt to placate all of the above.

Phew... I needed that. A nice bit of blowing off steam. Now, if you'll excuse me - its 4.45am, I should sleep I suppose.

Hey, look at it this way: At least you know what you haven't got. I'm sure your dad feels the same, he may show some irritation since it all seemed like a false alarm but if it was my kid I'd rather be safe than sorry .

Heya Barry. I'm glad you don't have meningitus man! That is NOT a pleasant experience to go through, at any time in your life. My Grandfather contracted it a few years back, he survived, but it was a rough, rough ride. Kudos on getting it checked out quick smart. With meningitus' rapid pace minutes can count, so well done!

Man, it certainly sounds like you have alot on your plate. Fret not though, the people making demands of you will just have to accept that you are human and have your own schedule to balance. You're a hard worker and will handle what needs to be done. Good things take time, effort and money; the people involved with your various commitments will just have to be patient and share you Don't try to placate anyone, just do what needs to be done. That's how Lenin worked

Sleep! Hope you get better soon! BTW, are your teeth ok? Reason I ask, is sometimes an infected tooth can abscess, and cause those symptoms. (Even vertigo) but the rash, I dunno.

Did the doc give you anything for this? (Meds?)

If the doc's can't find a cause of these symptoms, I'd wonder if they weren't brought on by all the stress you seem to have in your life right now.I'm not in any way saying not to seek medical advice but a long weekend away from it all might help.

Good thing you haven't got meningitis (sp?) You just need to try and relax a bit sometimes: Stess isn't good for you. And then just do what you need to.

Cheers guys. And while we're on the subject of Lenin, Heirophant, one of my housemates has found a quote from him that goes something on the lines of: "The duty of a student revolutionary is to study, study, study!". So maybe I can throw that at my left friends, but I get the horrible feeling they aren't going to pay much attention to it.

Ah well, as Walter would say: "**** it dude, lets go bowling.".

Well, Barry, whatever it is that is causing you physical discomfort, I do hope you recover from it soon. I can imagine the pressures that you are facing (I remember a number of times when I had a high fever, sore throat and bad cold, yet ended up conducting 2-hour training sessions to external parties instead of resting as the doctor advised, simply because no one else in the office seemed to be able to do the job and it was too late to cancel the sessions).

From my own experience, we can't go too wrong with listening to our own bodies (if it's screaming for rest, try to respect it since nobody else will if you don't ). Sufficient rest will give you both physical and mental strength to face the gruelling challenges life will continue to hurl at you. Taking plenty of fluids (especially plain water) should also help to flush your body of any toxins.

Take care and do let us know when you feel better.

When in doubt and the pressure is on, I always follow a simple philosophy.

I take care of myself first and worry about others later. After all, if I don't take care of myself I won't be around long, and who are they going to get annoyed at then?
