So... are we gonna talk about Benazir Bhutto, or what?
Because I think it's a crying shame. I've been following her ever since she came back into the public eye, and I must confess that I was very hopeful about her (though feared she'd go and get herself killed). I was thinking, this is it! This is how it's going to work! They're ready for democracy, she's one of their own, yay women, all of that "beacon of hope" malarkey that Bush claimed would happen in Iraq would happen here, the ripples in the pond stuff would happen, and we'll all go home and make tea!
How fascinating.

What is there to talk about?
The cover up? The fact they have been doing this for thousands of years? The riots afterwards? OR that Clinton woman has really stirred the pot with her comments? I sat numb for a moment after reading about it on the world news, then seeing it on the evening news.

Re: So... are we gonna talk about Benazir Bhutto, or what?
I did the same thing. Yes, I suppose there isn't much to talk about, but I was mildly surprised that nobody even acknowledged it on here. I tried to discuss it with some friends of mine, but few knew what I was talking about. I wonder where all the outrage is.
Edit- Oh, I haven't been able to find anything Hillary's had to say on this, but I don't believe for a second she hasn't said anything. Are there any links you can give me, Felix?

Here's a quick link for you, Illumina. I hadn't heard her say anything, but was curious because, as you said, "I don't believe for a second she hasn't said anything."
In any event, her death was quite a pity. I still don't think there's a chance for democracy over there, but she was our best bet. |

Re: So... are we gonna talk about Benazir Bhutto, or what?
I knew very little about her, but had a positive feeling about her. After she was killed there were several people on CBC radio speaking about it. One woman on the panel said she only went back into politics to get more money because she was running low on cash and she really wasn't interested in the country at all.
Obviously, that tainted my perception of her somewhat.

Quote:
You heard what you heard, and nobody can ever have you un-hear it. However, I offer you this. The entire return was US backed, and I'll give you a quote from an article that brings tale telling insight to some areas of my government. I was an agent of my government for over 23 years, some in every day units, and some time was spent is locations never revealed to the general public. "For Benazir Bhutto, the decision to return to Pakistan was sealed during a telephone call from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice just a week before Bhutto flew home in October. The call culminated more than a year of secret diplomacy -- and came only when it became clear that the heir to Pakistan's most powerful political dynasty was the only one who could bail out Washington's key ally in the battle against terrorism."

Re: So... are we gonna talk about Benazir Bhutto, or what?
He means that Bhutto was the perfect puppet for the US government.
And I suppose that when someone's assassinated, some of the less flattering career landmarks are quickly swept under the table. But Bhutto has been involved in huge corruption and money laundering scandals for decades now, also involving official investigations in Poland, France and Switzerland, even leading to an official sentence in the latter country of six months in jail and an $11 million dollar fine to be paid to the Pakistani government. Of course she always denied the allegations, but there are better 'girl power' role models in the world, I suppose. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benazir_Bhutto |

Hmmm... As an exercise, can you name six right now, without Google or taking more than five minutes? Can anyone? This actually sparks a curiosity in me.
